The Unbranded Brand Men's UB301 Straight-Leg Jean in Indigo Selvedge

These are either slightly large, or as-expected, depending on how you feel about vanity sizing. They measure an inch larger in the waist than they are sized at. Good-quality, sturdy (but not heavy), selvedge denim. Distinctly better than the Levi's Shrink-to-Fit, at about the same weight fabric. These wear much longer, and fade much more interestingly. The attached photos are from a pair that have been worn nearly daily for a year (probably 300+ times), hand-washed when they got dirty to keep too much of the indigo from coming off in the wash. Like many deeply-dyed indigo jeans, they bleed blue dye heavily when wet and rubbed. Don't wash with anything you don't want to become blue, or hand-wash.

This is my first venture into raw denim and I'm comparing them to my usual jeans: Levi 505 32X34. First off, I found the fit to be true to size for me. If you go to Unbranded's website, you'll see that the waist size of the jeans are actually about 1" larger than the tag size. I followed their guide and measured my 505's, which actually measured about 34" in the waist with a tag size of 32. I bought a pair of 33 Unbranded and found them to be too big. Ordered a pair in 32 and they fit perfectly. Snug, but not too tight. I washed them once (Not washing your clothes is gross, IMO.) and air dried them. They started out stiff as a board but are starting to soften up just a little (This is only my third day of wearing them.) Time will tell to see how durable they are but they remind me of Carhartt's cotton duck/canvas material. I'm looking forward to seeing how these fade and what kind of patterns develop. Only real complaints I have is that the front pockets are pretty small and the belt loops seem super fragile. Update: Now I could have gotten fatter (even though I still weigh the same) or the jeans could have shrunk. 32's are too tight. Going to have to go with 33's.

The jeans run small, which is annoying, but I ordered a couple sizes through Amazon to find my fit after reading some reviews. But what was really disappointing about this product is right when I got them on, a belt loop immediately tore off. It's very frustrating when $80 jeans can't meet the quality control standards of $15 old navy jeans.

Fits as expected, true to the manufacturer's online chart (I provided instructions to get to UB's product page below). I have a 32" waist, but ordered a 33. As per the website, that would mean a 34" waist, which is about true to where my pants actually sit. Technically I could have ordered a 32 (I have a Size 32 pair of UB 355s that fit just fine), but wanted a pair of jeans that fit loose for cold weather layering. Out of the box, the buttons fly buttons are really tight. Raw denim, which is still a niche hobby, has certain quirks that are more or less universal. Things like, being tight (with the expectation that the waist will loosen up by about an inch over time), being initially uncomfortable, and indigo staining are to be expected. My only gripes with the brand are the annoyingly tiny front pockets. Bottom line: If you measure yourself with a tape measure, go off the company's official size chart, and buy with the understanding that these are generally accepted to be on the most affordable end of the raw denim/selvedge spectrum, you should have no problems (not caused by manufacturer error). They're ... OK. I got a 36", which was actually 34" when measured with a tapemeasure. Super tight in the thighs – I'm 5'9" and just under 200# and they are extremely snug. Also, the leather patch is only half stitched on, and the seam in one leg was coming out – it wasn't properly finished on one cuff and I had to fix that too. All in all, this would be fine in a $35 pair of jeans, but is really disappointing in a $90 pair, and I am feeling serious buyer's remorse right now. And don't wash them in a machine! These went through the wash and came out with a huge amount of the dye gone (cold wash, regular detergent, nothing fancy) – and white crease striations all over them. So I basically wasted a huge amount of money. Cheap Levis or Gap jeans would be much better I think.

This is my first foray into the whole selvedge/raw scene. These seem to be pretty solid construction for the price. I had to size up 2 inches at the waist from my usual (gap, levi) waist sizing. Still tight in the rear but I'm giving them some time to break in. I had them hemmed up as well. I guess my complaint is that the straight cut is almost more like a boot cut. Hard to wear these with slimmer profile shoes and sneakers. (For example, look at the model in the image they've attached to this) Look good with boots though. I would recommend you try on the skinny cuts as well for a more modern look. But I expect that even as beaters they would last for a lot longer than commodity denim.

If you are looking for a pair of raw denim jeans, but don't want to pay 300 bucks for Japanese imported brands, look no further. Be sure to heed their measuring suggestions! Measure your best fitting jeans tight across the belt line on one side and double it, that should be the waist site you order. Depending on the cut, I float between a 30 to a 32, I ordered the 32 and it fit great. ALL of these jeans are cut to 33 inseam. I like my jeans to be a bit loose and baggy at the cuff, so this was fine for me. If you do not like that, you can either fold the cuff (like the 50's style) or have then hemmed.

These do fit well, but take a while to break in. By choice I'd prefer the belt loops to be a bit wider (like say 501s). They do fade well, but should not be washed - soak in hot water and drip/air dry.
