CO2 is what makes your soda fizzy and is in in chained cylinders at restaurants... CO is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas. The ONLY way to detect it is by detector. It is generated by any gas-powered appliances like dryers, stoves, snowblowers, cars, etc, and by burning like fire places. CO is BARELY lighter than air (about .96 to air being 1 for vapor density), and will mix and collect like normal air does, with drafts and normal air movement. CO detectors can be mounted at just about any height, though many manufacturers (somewhat arbitrarily) picked 5ft or chest height as the ideal mounting height. Smoke and heat rise, so smoke/heat detectors are required to be mounted within 12" of the ceiling. I'm not sure why there are so many ugly smoke alarms on the market, you have to look at the thing constantly on your wall so it might as well not stand out like some hideous big octagon shape with bright red lettering...I wouldn't worry about the safety end of testing how well it detects, any UL listed alarm is already tested to a fairly high standard so you shouldn't have safety issues there. I don't find this to be prone to false alarms either, I think those are leaving bad reviews about the false alarms probably have it in a bad placement. It shouldn't be too close to the kitchen if at all avoidable and after that, I'm not sure what people are doing that gives them all these false alarms they like to complain about. Even regular smoking shouldn't be setting it off unless you're sitting directly below the thing.As for looks, I wish it was even slimmer but it's the slimmest battery only detector I've found, it is a noticeable difference versus the competition. Also the color is a nice white white, no tan off-white stuff that doesn't match the ceiling. I wish the lettering was white too but it's reasonably small print and doesn't show from across the room.I like the idea of a permanent battery, no more low battery chirping.
