An absolute MUST for hot summer days
4 YEARUPDATE 2022: It's been 4 years since I've purchased this portable AC unit. I've been using it everyday, when it's not summer I simply use the built in fan for air flow when I'm working and white noise when I'm sleeping. When it's blazing hot during summer I have the unit blasting cool air in my home office while I'm working and when I am done for the day and want to chill outside of my office I can run my central air and save A LOT of money on my electric bill. This is an absolute must buy if you're looking for some AC relief without breaking the bank. I will without a doubt buy a brand new one the moment this thing breaks down on me but it's been going strong for 4 years now and I still can't see it breaking anytime soon! ORIGINAL REVIEW: The central air in my house is broken and it would cost me nearly $7,000 to fix it so I decided to pass and buy this portable air conditioner and it gets the job done for a far less price. It’s only been a couple of days since I’ve used this thing and it’s been a LIFE SAVER. It gets up to 110F where I am and this ac unit cools down my room within minutes! I set it to turn off after 1 hour to save energy. I don’t expect this thing to cool down my entire living room but I always go to my room after work and I’m satisfied so far. My only complaints is the less than helpful instruction manual to set this up but you can get an idea on how to install this thing from YouTube, my other complaint is that it’s fairy loud but honestly the benefit far outweighs the cons so it gets 5 stars in my book. I’ll be sure to update my review if I encounter any problems, but as of now I’d highly recommend this unit if you want to beat the summer heat every year. UPDATE 08/19/18: It has been about 2 months since I’ve bought and used the unit now and I still stand by what I said about this device, it is a LIFE SAVER! My area has been consistently hot all summer with temperatures ranging from 99F - 107! And not once did I ever feel the summer heat indoors. This was definitely worth the purchase and is an amazing investment for future summers to come. UPDATE 05/17/21: It has been 3 years since I’ve owned this portable air conditioner and I firmly believe this is by far one of my greatest investments. It has reached upwards of 119 degrees where I live over the past 3 years of owning this AC unit and it’s been a LIFESAVER. I do not regret buying this and I can say with full confidence I would immediately buy a new one should this one fail; as things stand however, I don’t see it failing anytime soon!

Compressor life may be limited
Bought in 2023. Kept a small apartment mostly cool. Worked ok in 2024 and 2025, cooling a modest sized porch. Compressor mostly not running this year, but no errors. (Did not tip it during movement or installation this year.) Trying my luck with 12000 BTU unit this year because my window is set up for this 5” hose and adapters.

Unit works great, cooled down a small room during a heat wave superbly..but install kit is flawed.
This air conditioner exceeded my expectations, which were low for a portable unit as I'd never used one before. I'm in the middle of a broiling summer in the San Fernando Valley, with outdoor temps well over 100. My 2 bedroom apartment unit had been furnished with 1 measly wall AC, tucked away in the corner of a living room. The living room was comfortable but not cool, the bedrooms were unusable and I had taken to sleeping in the living room for days. I was fed up. However, I am not handy and was intimidated by trying to figure out how to address sliding windows so a portable unit seemed like the ideal solution. More expensive, but at least I could install it on my own. Unfortunately, the install was the worst part of this AC. The kit is poorly designed- my window was in the 30" tall range so the shortest piece (with the vent) was too small, but the extension pieces were too big so they would have obstructed the vent. The instructions only advised to cut to fit- how the heck do I cut this plastic? I don't own a saw. So I improvised in desperation and cut some thick cardboard from the box to fit the gap and bought some foam tape (the included foam was too wide for my window frame as well) to seal everything up. In time, I will likely cut some plexiglass for a stronger solution to this. After this hurdle, I have to say everything else has been wonderful. My (admittedly small) bedroom is now the coolest room, most comfortable room in the whole place and I had the best sleep after hooking this up. I actually had to turn it down because I was freezing by the midnight! Even in the height of the heat today (over 100), my room has not gone over 75 internal temp. Combined with a ceiling fan, this room is crisp and cold. It's not quiet but I would rather have this noise than be sweating and miserable. Plus the unit is easy to move with wheels when it's winter time. My expectations for cooling were exceeded with this machine definitely!

Don't buy this AC
I purchased the 10,000 BTU version of this on June 12, 2023. I like my office being colder than the rest of the house, so I thought that this would be an ideal purchase. On July 20, 2023 I noticed that the unit would beep twice and shutdown for no apparent reason. It would run for an hour and then shut off. I ran through every troubleshooting theory I could think of: check the water tank, clean the filter (it wasn't dirty), try a different location to rule out ventilation issues (single hose AC unit so it creates a vacuum and needs proper ventilation to take in the warm air in the room), and a different outlet. After doing all of these things, the problem still occurs. I reached out to BLACK+DECKER for warranty information as it is clear this is a defective unit and I received this email back - **We want to apologize for the inconvenience that you are experiencing with your Portable air conditioner. I will be happy to assist you. The product you are referring to is handled by a specialized team. They would handle all inquiries requesting warranty, literature, or replacement parts regarding this product. I would also like to provide you with their direct contact information for future reference. Here is the contact information: W Appliance Edit: Amazon won't let me post their company phone number Edit: Amazon won't let me post their company email address (Equity Brands email)** After being provided with this information, I thought that it was odd that the email domain "equitybrands.com" was different from the company name "W Appliance." I researched both of the names only to find out that they're the same company, except "equity brands" has such poor reviews with the BBB that they registered themselves under a different company name "W Appliance" which, unsurprisingly, has just as many negative reviews on BBB, Google, Reddit, and a few other review based platforms that I discovered. It seems W Appliance/Equity Brands has a history of taking possession of products to fix/replace and then never sending the repaired/replaced unit back. Additionally, I saw several reviews of people reporting their unit has been in the process of being "repaired" for over 2 years without being fixed/replaced. After the extensive research I've done to determine if it would be worth me contacting BLACK+DECKER's "specialized team" per the abundance of negative reviews, I've concluded that it would be less of a headache to simply buy a new product from a reputable brand such as Whynter, which I've used in my garage for 4+ years without any issues whatsoever. Very disappointed to see how poorly the quality of BLACK+DECKER products have become.

Love my A/C
Bought this ac several years ago and it is still going strong. Easy to clean the vent, blows strong cold air, and love the remote control. It’s easy to set up, fit perfectly in my window, and

SMALL AND MIGHTY
This is in a very hot room on the top floor that faces directly east in the morning sun in southern California- and works great/ It was purchased to replace a 15 year old A/C that no longer did the job, was very loud and took up a lot of space. This is easily 1/3 the size of the old one, whisper quiet and cools the room (which can be as hot as 90 degrees by the end of the day) in less than half an hour (even when set to 74 degress). It's a good value from a trusted brand. ONE BIG COMPLAINT ABOUT IT - the LED lights indicating mode, temperature etc are SO RIDICULOUSLY BRIGHT that they light up the whole room at night. It's light high-beam headlights on a highway. IT'S MORE THAN EXCESSIVE. I WISH the lights were adjustable to dim them. But since they're not, I've taken to piling things on top of it to block the light (which looks really ugly). So, if you're using this in a child's room or anyone who is light sensitive, buy something else. So, it works great, but this one major design flaw makes me wish I'd bought something else.

Really great air conditioner!
I got the 10,000 BTU model for my 10x14 bedroom, so definitely some overkill. That said, I knew as soon as I opened the box that this black and decker was a very high quality product. This is the 4th portable air conditioner I've bought in the last 4 years and it's hands down the best. Even though it's relatively inexpensive - it's listed as a Top Budget Pick on the popular review website where I read about it. But right before buying this one, I went with a model $200 less from a brand I'd never heard of. Not only did it not effectively cool my room, it was low quality in a host of ways. (I'm definitely returning that one, now that this black & decker has arrived) This black & decker is obviously high quality just at first glance: • it includes foam insulation material along with its window kit (with others I found myself taping gaps shut) • The ventilation hose is made of a sturdy yet flexible material that bent easily. I have no fear that it will split at the seams, the way the cheapo model did. • The ventilation hose is "finished" on the ends. Meaning, the plastic couplers needed to attach it to the window panel and the machine itself were already attached to the hose. With the cheapo model, I was expected to do that myself. And when the pieces inevitably didn't attach properly, I found myself once again reaching for my gorilla tape. All these thoughtful touches mean that I had the whole thing set up and cooling my room in less than 15 minutes. It took me longer to unpack the box than it did to hook up the machine. Incredible! The machine is nice and quiet; I can still hear the sound of my fan over it. Plus it's nice and compact so it doesn't take up as much floor space. After the disastrous disappointment of my other recent cheapo purchase, I'm thrilled that I picked a winner with this black & decker.

Worked great but didn't last long
I got this air conditioner back in early summer 2017. It ran great, got my small studio apartment well cooled in a short period of time. It's not quiet but it's not the loudest AC unit I've ever heard either. The window/hose situation was probably the one thing I would say isn't great, I ended up having to duct tape the hose on both the machine and window panel side because it just didn't want to stay "clicked" in to the plastic fittings. I've read lots of reviews about other portable AC units where the window mount and/or hose are much worse than that, so I'd only take about one star off for that. Definitely the machine uses energy but the bills in the heavy use months weren't double or anything. Probably would've given this a 4 star rating prior to a few weeks ago... A few weeks ago (end of July 2021) it was running one night, began to make a loud clicking noise, flashed "LT" on the LED screen, and after that never ran cold air again. "LT" is supposed to mean that the coils have frozen over and just need to defrost. This is not something that had ever happened before. That night I turned the machine off for 8+ hours to see if the coils would defrost then, it was definitely warm enough that they should have, but I don't think that was actually the issue. Also spent a lot of time trying to open up the machine as much as one can and making sure there was no ice, or dust or dirt buildup, there was not. The machine does run its motor when in the AC mode now, but even after some time there is just not that refrigerant-generated cold air, it's just more of a strong fan. Not worth it to run all that energy for just a strong fan. After checking around, I discovered that there aren't any repair places in my area (Seattle) that handle this type of machine. And trying to DIY repair it is not reasonable for an average person who doesn't have time, engineering/repair skills, and specific tools. So this is just something that I have to replace. Maybe one day some brand will make a model that can be repaired easily and safely, or maybe more repair techs will catch on and open up their doors for people who would rather repair than replace. Not sure how long the average portable AC unit lasts, would love to see some statistics on that now that so many people in places without built-in AC are now buying units like these. But thinking that I'm going to have to pay $300-$500 every 4 years to replace these machines is tough to stomach. Not to mention disposing of it responsibly, these things should not go straight to landfill. Maybe I got a lemon and they last longer - here's hoping that's true while I shop for my next one.
