Yes to both. I would recommend a portable dvd player with at least a 10 inch screen. The picture would be larger and clearer, and it would also be louder.

I will use this to hear music in the car. Does this device need speakers?

I didn't use speakers. However, if you are using this in the car, you could probable play the audio-visual through your car radio. I have not tried that. I use player mainly at home at my desk.

does it play videos from flash drives ?

My unit does not have a USB port.
