Excellent tortilla press (8") -- heavy & durable cast iron (requires a bit of TLC) + easy to use...
This is an excellent tortilla press. I had a heavy, cast aluminum one many years ago and it worked great but somehow ended up getting lost in our many moves and I never replaced it. Over the last year or so, I've been looking at various types of presses from different brands. The aluminum ones I have seen are nothing like my original one, so I decided to focus on the wooden and cast iron versions. I have a lot of cast iron cookware and I use it all of the time -- I find it incredibly easy to use and very durable. So when this 8" version became available, I was very interested. I chose this one over the pricer HD version in the same size, and this one is definitely sturdy enough for my use. Some reviews mention a handle that is plastic rather than cast iron, but the press I received is 100% cast iron and very well made. My favorite brand of cast iron (the iconic USA manufacturer) doesn't make a tortilla press and I have noticed that some imported cast iron cookware is not as heavy and often has unfinished areas and large pores, but this brand is of very high quality. I already have a dutch oven made by Victoria (imported from Colombia) so I was sure this would also be top-notch. And it is. Since it is cast iron, it will need a bit of extra care to prevent rusting so if you are not familiar with seasoning cast iron, be sure to do a bit of research before ordering. The press is heavy, smooth and pre-seasoned and turns out perfect medium-sized corn tortillas (I roll flour tortillas) that are then cooked on a comal/griddle on the stove top. The lettering is very crisply rendered. There is a smaller 6 1/2" as well as a larger 10" version, but this 8" model is just the right size for my family. The hinge pins and especially the cotter pins don't seem particularly robust, but they are holding up well so far + they can easily be replaced if needed -- they are inexpensive and readily available at a hardware store. I think this tortilla press is well worth the modest cost.

Must have for corn tortillas
I hadn’t made tortillas for 50 years. When I decided to make them again, I opted for this cast iron press instead of the aluminum one I had years ago. Is it heavy? You bet it is! It also makes the most consistent thickness with the least amount of effort. The quality of this press is excellent. If you really enjoy making corn tortillas, this is the press oyu want.

Great for pre-shaping round tortillas
This seems like a good quality tortilla press and I can see it lasting awhile. Immediately I was a little concerned with them sending an extra pin for the handle so this to me suggests this piece breaks or gets lost easily. But it’s nice to have a back up. The 8 inch will not press out a perfect 8 inch tortilla. It’s just impossible since there is not even pressure evenly distributed to do so. Believe me, I rotated my tortilla 90° at least 10 times and the largest it can make is a 5 inch tortilla. In my photo you will see a smaller tortilla using just the press. The larger tortilla above it is an 8 inch tortilla only achieved but using a rolling pin to go over the pre-shaped tortilla that the press initiated. The best technique I found for flour tortillas is to use the gallon size plastic food storage bag and cut the sides of it leaving the back in tact. Place the plastic back on the press. Take the ball of dough and flatten it with your hands then place it on the plastic close to the hinge. Lower the press and use the handle gently. Pressing harder with the handle will not make it any flatter but will put more wear on the handle joint. Then open the press and rotate the bag 90°. I rotate and press about 5-6 times. Now grab your rolling pin and go right over the plastic bag in an upward then downward direction. You can remove the dough from the bag and reposition in the sandwiched bag if the dough is getting too close to the seam. I will continue to rotate a few times and maybe use the press again if I have badly misshaped the round form. Basically I use the press as a starter to guide me in the round shaping then follow up with a rolling pin on top of the tortilla press plate to get it thinner and guiding the shape to be round still. I can not roll out round tortillas of my life depended on it and I find I get thinner and better shaped tortillas with this method.

Easy to use a quality product
Abolutely love my cast iron tortilla press. Nothing is better than making you own tortillas. The cast iron press is extremely sturdy and works beautifully, it flattens dough evenly with minimual effort making the whole process quick and enjoyable.

Excellent quality, flattens super thin and even (if you know how to use a press properly).
100% recommend. I was hesitant to get a tortilla press from Columbia because their tortillas suck but this press is excellent. Very high quality. To be clear, I got the HD model that is a bit more dense and thinner. I would absolutely buy this again. My tortillas are ultra-thin and bubble up nicely on the comal.

Heavy, Sturdy, and Easy on the Hands
I love this tortilla press! There was a bit of a learning curve figuring out how to prevent the dough from sticking to the parchment, but once I found a method that worked, it became very easy to use. I place the tortilla directly on the pan with the parchment and cook it for a few seconds on each side, and it releases without any issues. I used it to make whole wheat pumpkin tortillas for my toddler, and I won’t be going back to rolling them by hand. I have sensitive wrists and hands, so using a rolling pin for long periods can be uncomfortable. This press helps reduce strain and makes it easy to get tortillas as thin as I want with very little effort. I’m also happy I chose the 8-inch size instead of the 10-inch. For me, the larger size would have been harder to handle, while the 8-inch feels just right. The press is heavy, sturdy, and feels very well made. I think it’s worth the price, and I’m hoping it lasts long enough for my daughter to enjoy using it in her own kitchen one day.
