They are a similar thickness to 1mm neoprene. They are not waterproof. They are designed to feel as barely there as possible whilst offering protection to your feet. They provide some insulation keeping my feet warm in colder water in the summer but you would need something thicker in very cold water. My mates laughed at them and said they were ballet shoes when I first put them on because they use boot style swim find/socks. But they are fine for the summer and I'm very happy with them.
