There was no smell out of the box, and it even came with extra filters so you don't need to immediately go buy more. It was very tight on me until I used the strap that comes in the box to make it adjustable which was then able to fit me very well. It feels quality, maybe not better than a paint sprayer mask, but this is better than something dirt cheap. It has suitable dust protection.
