Is it sturdy enough to be used as a walking stick as well?

Nope. I tried, even though I knew it wasn't sturdy enough, and it bent in half. Get a Primos Trigger stick, or similar if you need a walking stick as well.

can you unscrew the mount on the top of the stick? Or is it permanently fastened?

Yes, you can unscrew the "V" yoke. After removal a screw is exposed that you can mount a camera or spotting scope on. Hope that helps!
