Full disclosure: I have begun ordering this product regularly enough that its makers just sent me a free bottle for being a consistent customer. So I decided to return the favor by writing a review. Here's why I'm so sold on this particular formula: as a female in her 60s who has been plagued with chronic, stubborn insomnia since girlhood, I've tried a lot of pharmaceutical, herbal and over the counter remedies over the years. Of the natural remedies I've sampled, this one is by a good margin the only one that works appreciably for me: makes me drowsy enough to fall asleep initially at night, works fairly quickly, and causes zero side effects or hangover morning grogginess. Everyone's body and metabolism is different, and drugs, even natural ones, affect all of us differently, I get it, but for me, I'm just sayin', I RELY on this stuff. I hope they don't stop making it. It contains "raspberry flavoring" which makes it QUITE sweet in an odd way, overly sweet but who cares if it works better than anything else in its class and contains only non-harmful ingredients!!!!! I probably take slightly more than the recommended dose, with no ill effects. I have taken plenty of formulas with most of these ingredients before, but for some reason, this is the magic combo for me, where other similar herbal sleep cocktails have done little or nothing for me. It's not cheap, but a bottle lasts a while, as you're taking droppers-full, and for me, it's worth every penny due to its vastly superior effectiveness.

I bought this product a while back to help with getting my body back to a regular schedule after I stopped working nights. I was looking for something that would make me fall asleep and keep me asleep all night without making me drowsy. I had tried everything available at the local drug store from over the counter sleep meds to melatonin to tea combinations and finally cold medicine. They all consistently helped with one problem but not the other.(would make me fall asleep but not stay asleep, or would make me drowsy) I finally ordered this product after reading the reviews and the description. It seems to work pretty well if you don't mind some wild dreams! It's a little strange tasting but that's to be expected and a little pricey in my opinion. But both of those are worth it if the product helps me sleep all night without waking up drowsy. Well it does that for the most part. Occasionally I would have to double my dose to get to sleep. (It says on the bottle this is ok) Unfortunately because of this I ran through the bottle pretty quickly. Also eventually the weird dreams became too much for me and I decided to stop taking it. Even though I wasn't waking up drowsy I noticed I didn't have as much energy throughout the day which I assume is due to disturbed sleep from the crazy dreams. My boyfriend says I would talk in my sleep and thrash around and spin in the bed until the sheets came off the mattress. He started to say "guess it's time for spin class" whenever he saw me taking the nocturest. Lol....so overall it does what it claims but for me it's too expensive and makes me have way too many crazy dreams for me to continue to use it.

NoctuRest is a blessing for me. I am in my mid 60s and have had serious problems falling asleep for many years. I tried all the OTC products to no avail. Melatonin alone did nothing. I finally asked my doctor for sleeping pills. Ambien worked fine BUT after waking one morning with a half eaten cheesecake, which I had apparently eaten with my hands, next to me on the bed I was concerned. Later, on two separate occasions, I woke to find my double front doors standing wide open. That ended my relationship with Ambien and I was afraid to try any other prescription sleep aids. My pattern became not sleeping at all one night, four or five hours the next night, maybe two or three the next night and crash the next. I began doing some research and then turned to Amazon where I found this miracle. I just received my second bottle. I wanted to finish the first before writing a review. Without a doubt this is the best sleep aid I have ever tried. I have been consistently using it since my first order arrived on February 1st. From that night on I fall asleep easily and sleep 8 or 9 hours a night with no morning after “hangover”. I find it works best for me if I take a “full” dropper, which actually looks like a half dropper, an hour and a half before bed. Then 30 minutes later I take about half of a dose. In about 15 - 30 minutes I’m in dreamland. I’m including a photo of the ingredients so that you can see all the natural goodness. Update-I am now on bottle #6 and have been using NoctuRest for almost 6 months. After having dealt with insomnia for over 30 years I am now falling asleep easily and sleeping through the night with none of the side effects of Prescription sleeping pills. The only side effect is a good one. Getting a good night’s sleep regularly has changed my life. I am less stressed, have more energy, and am more focused and alert, making my job a lot easier. I WILL NEVER STOP USING THIS! Update February 2022 I have now been using this for over a year and can only repeat my endorsement of this product. Being able to get a good eight hours of sleep EVERY NIGHT has made such a difference in my life. I can’t, of course, guarantee that it will be this effective for everyone but, if you suffer from insomnia, as I did for decades, I urge you to give it a fair trial of at least a month. A year and a half and I couldn’t be more pleased. I work 40 hours a week and also take care of an 85 year old relative with hip problems and an extremely short term memory. I was worried that stress would eventually affect my sleep, but NoctuRest just keep on doing it’s thing. NEVER STOP SELLING IT!!! Update 2/25/23 Over two years and still sleeping every night. The past year was very stressful as my 87 year old sister’s short term memory loss became full blown dementia. She’s a little stubborn and would argue about anything she couldn’t remember. Many days I was so stressed I was sure I wouldn’t be able to sleep but NoctuRest came through for me every time. For me, it’s a lifesaver.

After some research, I have found these results about over the counter sleep medications. I hope it will serve as a guide to readers who are encouraged to do their own research before buying a sleep aid. There are basically two active ingredients - doxylamine succinate and diphenhydramine HCl; both are antihistamines. Doxylamine succinate's most popular distributor is Unisom in tablet form and diphenhydramine HCl is marketed mostly as an anti-allergy OTC medication under the brand name Benadryl. Some brands include one or the other under their PM offerings to help people sleep when they have colds, coughs or flu. If you look at the active ingredients in the many sleep aids offered by different manufacturers, one of these two active ingredients will be what you are buying, however the prices vary widely for exactly the same relief. It has been established that these two anti-histamines cause drowsiness and can help people sleep well. Your body can get used to them and after a few weeks the effectiveness decreases. For the herbal sleep aids, most of them have melatonin and valerian root as their base and then embellish their products with several other herbal ingredients in different concentrations, such as magnesium, L-Theanine, some common vitamins and a a bunch of others. Some have L-tryptophan. Melatonin has been established as a viable sleep aid. Tryptophan and valerian root are established as a relaxants and can work as mild sleep aids. For the other ingredients there is uncertainty about their effectiveness as sleep aids. For most of these, the dosages that work are not established and may vary considerably from person to person. There seem to be 100 or more herbal sleep aid products on Amazon. All the ones I checked have essentially the same base ingredients already mentioned and a number of additional ones that vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. It may be argued that the combination of ingredients may make one product more effective than another. This is possible, but I did not find any studies to support such synergistic effects. My conclusion is that all the sleep aid products have basically the same ingredients but sell for prices that can vary by a factor of 10. There is no reason to believe that the more expensive products will work better. The best strategy may be to buy the basic products, that is melatonin, valerian root or the anti-histamine containing pills and see how it goes. I have tried quite a few products with mixed results. What works best for me, for a few days at a time is doxylamine succinate.

This actually works for moms sleeplessness resulting from taking Prednisone. No complaints at all.

I'm really on the fence about this stuff. I suffer from night-owl-itis; I need to sleep, but my body, and especially my brain, have other plans. I enjoy staying up late, but my job is totally getting in the way of my preferred sleep schedule. So therefore I must conform to a more logical sleep schedule - during the week anyway. IF this stuff works, it's so subtle, it's very easy for me to stay awake after taking it. I didn't expect it to knock me out, I have very realistic expectations. And I do actually fall asleep, just not as easily as hoped. Plus I've changed some other sleep habits to try to better my ability to fall & stay asleep. So it's difficult to tell if it works at all. I know it makes no claim to keep you asleep once asleep, but I seem to be waking up around 2x a night, a new phenomenon for me. But I'm attributing most of that to no longer using pills (otc or rx) for sleep & being menopausal. I doubt this stuff is causing me to wake. But wanted to note that. IMPORTANT TIP: If you don't breathe thru your nose while taking it & for about 5 min after, you won't taste that gross earthy taste AT ALL. You will only taste the sweet flavor, which is pleasant enough to take it easily every night. You're welcome. =)

I have been dealing with insomnia for years so was encouraged by the positive reviews I saw on this product. After I placed the order, I found a product at home I had bought some time ago and apparently forgot about- Herb-Pharm's Relaxing Sleep. Decided to try it while I waited for Nocturest to arrive. Herb-Pharm product worked amazingly. Since the ingredients were similar I was optimistic about Nocturest, but it didn't work for me at all. In the past melatonin has worked for awhile then stopped and I have heard that melatonin is not intended for everyday use. Herb-Pharm does not contain melatonin and is much less expensive. I was delighted with the ease of returning the Nocturest (since it is very expensive!) through Amazon. I was able to print a return label and place the item in my home mailbox- no cost, no hassle. Nocturest may work for others and given the ease of returning it, it may be worth a try, but I'm spending my money on Herb-Pharm. Be advised that both have an unpleasant taste and probably Herb-Pharm is worse- strong alcohol taste- but tolerable when diluted in water (don't try it straight up!) and worth a good night's sleep.

All four of my family members have sleep issues, including not being able to fall sleep, not staying asleep, and not being able to go back to sleep in the middle of the night. After researching a number of products, I ordered Nocturest. My daughter and son-in-law took the first bottle and, because it worked for them, didn't give it back. I ordered a second bottle for my husband and me and found that it works for us also. I can honestly say that everyone's sleep has improved since we started using Nocturest, and we don't find the taste unpleasant at all. It's interesting to me that after I take it, I'm not aware of getting drowsy but fall asleep quite naturally. This is not a miracle product, and it doesn't work every night for everyone, which is why I gave it four stars instead of five. However, It works well enough that we get two bottles monthly through auto-delivery to make sure that we don't run out.
