19425 JT850 Self-Igniting 20,000 BTU Outdoor Torch (JT850) | High Output Propane Torch Gun for Weeds, Ice Melting, Camping & Fire Pits | Hand Torch with Trigger Start

Bought this for my dad to use in leaf-management aka setting fire to piles of leaves & such, as an excuse to act like a kid with a match :) He LOVES it...easy to use, easy to start (push-button! no more scratch-strikers!), easy to store. So far it has been used to start a brush pile fire, start leaf piles to burning, kill pesky weeds in the patio cracks, and last weekend, it was used to exterminate an infestation of tent-caterpillars (don't be squeamish here..these caterpillars aren't the kind that turn into butterflies: they're the kind that will kill trees if left unchecked) without hurting the tree the nest was in!! 2 items of caution for those planning to use the torch for this though: 1) the nozzle should be kept lower than the tank at all times if possible to reduce possibilty of flame-out...if the nest is in a high limb, use a ladder. If you can't reach it safely from a ladder, cut the limb off and burn the nest when it hits the ground. If you can't do either of these, call an exterminator. 2) If you CAN safely reach the nest and keep the torch at a downward angle, start at the lowest point of the nest and work up. DO NOT focus the heat too long in one spot if you don't want to harm your tree. As the nest "melts", the caterpillars will drop to the ground where you can finish them off.Overall, this is the best thing since sliced bread. I had bought him a "dragon" style that fits the BBQ-grill-size tanks but it was very unwieldy (had to haul the tank around on a 2 wheeled dolly while he torched weeds) and it went back after one day. This one he likes so much, he went and bought a second 14oz cylinder to have on hand "just in case" but after a total of probably a full hour's use (at least) the first tank still isn't empty. If you need a handy fire starter, get this: you won't be disappointed.

I've had this for several months now and I love it. This is why:1) It is better than using chemicals. If you read round-up, in order for it to work it has to be applied when the weather is a certain temperature, no wind, and no rain for 24hrs. Add to that that it all has to happen on one of my days off, and quite frankly I have better odds of winning the lottery. I wouldn't use it during a high wind, but other than that, I have been able to use it whenever I wanted. Also, I think it works better than chemicals because it provides better weed control. I removed three large sections of lawn; one section I did weed control with chemicals, one section I used the torch, and on the third section I did nothing. The section with chemical spray looked hardly different from the section that I did nothing, but the section that I torched was almost weed free. There were some weeds that didn't die, and there were some others that sprouted later, but that's the nature of weeds. I just went over them with the torch again. The section of my yard that I used the torch for was far and away the easiest and least-weedy patch of ground.2) I also like that the torch burns things like dead leaves as well as green weeds. I have a lot of rock and gravel and this made cleanup easier3) I don't have to bend over to pull weeds and I don't get hand cramps pumping the weed-killer bottle. This was so much easier and faster!4) Some of the reviews complained about the flame going out easily. Although this did happen to me occasionally, it was always because the propane in the tank was getting too low. When I changed the bottle this problem stopped. Also realize that the hole to the mouth of the tube is little, so it can get suffocated more easily.Cons:1) There aren't a lot. Right now I feel that the tank is too little, but that is just because I am using it so much. I am in the middle of a large re-landscaping project, so I am using the torch A LOT and am running through tanks quickly. I deliberately chose the small model because I wanted to be able to use the torch around my flower beds. I think that it will be perfect once I get my garden established, but for now I am considering getting the adapter that allows you to use the large propane tanks.I highly recommend this product.

This weed burner works great, but goes through the disposable 1 pound cylinders rapidly if you have many weeds or much ground to cover. I bought a 'Mr. Heater 75,000 BTU 12-Foot Propane Hose Assembly #F273702' from Amazon to adapt this weed burner to a 20 pound propane tank.I now have a light weight weed burner that will run all day. My wife likes the light weight. I like the 12 foot range the hose gives and the fact that we aren't going through a mountain of disposable propane cylinders.I found there was a lot of confusion about how to adapt products that use the 1 pound disposable cylinders to bulk propane tanks, like those used by gas BBQs.Some notes on adapting propane products:1. If your product uses 1 pound disposable cylinders, you should be able to use any adapter such as the Mr. Heater hose to connect to a bulk tank. Propane in the cylinder or tank is in a liquid state and the pressure created by it evaporating to become the propane gas that you actually burn is the same. If your product needs a reduced pressure, it will have a regulator that you screw the 1 pound disposable cylinder into. There seems to be a lot of confusion about this. Even the representative I talked to at BernzOMatic got it wrong. He said I'd need a regulator to use a bulk tank with my Blaze Away weed burner.2. What will effect the propane gas pressure is temperature of the liquid. As the liquid propane evaporates, it cools. In the case of the Blaze Away weed burner, it uses propane at a rate that a 1 pound disposable cylinder cools down enough the pressure drops and the burner would go out and need to be re-lit. This would happen before the cylinder was empty and I'd have to switch to a new cylinder. Once the partial cylinder had warmed up, I could use the rest of the propane from it. Not a problem with a 20 pound bulk tank.3. There are two styles of fittings that connect to the modern bulk tanks with Overfill Protection Device (OPD) valves (required on 1 to 40 pound bulk tanks since 2002). One style screws onto the outside threads. These are often plastic. The other style screws into the internal threads and is usually brass. Both styles will open the internal anti-leak safety valve (A device that will keep propane gas from escaping the tank if the hose is removed and valve accidentally opened).

This is my second flame weeder and compared with the first, which lasted a few years, I like this one better because of the ignitor and because of the padded grip on the handle. I looked long and hard for a reasonably priced weeder to replace my last, and never found one for less than $50 until now, so kudos for the price. This one functioned perfectly out of the box, and appeared very sturdy and well made. Totally simple to use. Some reviewers mentioned the cushion grip can slip over the air intake, which has not happened. Some also mentioned the ignitor going out--so far so good on that, too (I've gone through two bottles of propane and probably used it several hours at this point, on three occasions, with multiple re-ignites). Others mentioned the propane tank leaking at the screw-on connection (the fix is to wrap the male connector with teflon plumbers tape)--mine does not leak. My one gripe is that the flame only works well so long as the propane bottle is fairly full. Once the bottle starts to dwindle--but with propane left--the flame seems to constantly go out no matter how high you turn the knob which controls the flow of propane from tank to device. Not sure why this happens--assuming it is some sort of pressure problem (?), but you can either keep re-igniting, over and over (frustrating), or just accept that you are going to waste some propane. Not a huge issue--propane is pretty cheap, but needs to be addressed in the design.

I don't normally write reviews, but after a year I had an issue with the lighter on this. I reached out to Bernzomatic and they took care of it right away. It's nice to see a company stand behind their product. Works well for torching weeds.

Iused to use a "jury rigged" inverted propane cylinder and attached nozzle afixed to a metal rod for the purpose of burning small unsightly weed seedlings, which would regularly pop-up between my driveway pavers and patio blocks. The problew with my "jury-rigged" set-up was that the inverted propane cylinder eventually allows liquid propane to seep into the torch nozzle and either created dangerous flare-ups or just caused the flame to extinguish. Also, the stock propane nozzles used for brazing/soldering would constantly "flame-out" due to the flame coming in close proximity to the pavers and would therefore cause the flame to blow-out/extinguish itself. The Bernzomatic JT850 Self-Igniting Outdoor Torch is engineered to maintain an upright cylinder position, eliminating all the inherent problems found with my "jury rigged" set-up mentioned above. Now, this tool is the right tool for the right job! Once you screw on the propane cylinder the tool is perfecly balanced and easy to handle. Open the valve, click the quartz ignition switch and you have a "jet-like afterburner flame" which will not flame-out and along with a accompanying satisfying roar, makes quick work of any weeds which dare to have poped-up between the bricks. Once you get the weeds eliminated and under control, maintenance is easy and actually fun? My entire circular driveway is now pristeen and weed-free and when new weeds appear, they are quickly eliminated, with just a momentary application of the searing flame. I belive, in additon to killing the visible part of the weed, the seed is also damaged by the heat as well, so new weeds appear less and less often. If you have pavers, or sidewalks, or even a cracked weed-prone concrete or asphalt driveway then I would definitely reccomend this tool. It is a quality piece, safe to operate (usual open flame cautions apply) and I actually look forward to the weed extermination exercise! I had considered a "knock-off" cheaper model, but luckily I stumbled upon a few owner reviews on those models, which complained of "flare-ups" and other inherent problems with the cheaper tool and decided to go for the more expensive "Bernzomatic JT850 Self-Igniting Outdoor Torch" and I am glad I did! Buy this product with confidence and look no further! If small weed elimination/maintenance is your goal, then this is definitely the tool you want to have in your arsenal! You'll be "weed free" in no time and you might even "enjoy the hunt" when they dare to return? Enjoy!

This is a great tool as long as you get a good one. they seem to be hit or miss. i ordered one on amazon but it would only stay lit for 30 seconds and then when i would try to relight it would only last a few seconds before going out again over and over. if you let it cool off it would last another 30 seconds and then repeat the same process again. i was like dang this thing sucks if you can only use it for 30 seconds at a time.My guess is that was just a bad one. some have this issue and others the ignitor goes out and a few have had the tube melt in half but i think that is rare. anyways i went and got another one at lowe's to try it out and it works perfectly. the flame doesn't go out unless you get too close to the ground or turn the gas down too much. if it does go out you can ignite it again and keep on working. i'm not sure what was wrong with the other one i got but this new one works great. it really is a fantastic product but there seems to be some quality control issues. maybe it's just the older ones that have the problems? i don't know. if you get a good one you will love it. you can be pretty precise with it unlike the bigger torches out there that are available. also the small 1lb gas tanks are cheap where as the larger tanks are kind of expensive and cumbersome to carry around.all i can say is if you get a bad one then just return it and try another until you get a good one.

Buyer beware. I buy about $100 off Amazon per month and do not write up reviews unless something is seriously wrong. This is my second negative review in about six years. The Bernzomatic torch worked for about 1.5 hours and then kept then going out. I called Bernzomatic Customer Service who suggested that I vacuum out the tube as my problem sounded like something was restricting the air / propane flow. Long story short see photos. This product may have had a manufacturing defect or the instructions were not complete.The torch appears to not have good design features: Air is mixed in below black handle rather than simply at the bottom of the tube. Air / propane mixture subject to wind pressure. Tube overheat melt off safety feature was good. Gasket at female end of handle that mates with propane bottle appears to be a natural fiber similar to cork which may flake off. Tube melted off when I purposely tested as listed below to try to isolate blow out issue which in my opinion was the air / propane mixture ratio and pressure.Sequence followed to figure out that torch is not usable:1. Vacuumed out torch tube from bottom with tank vacuum with good suction. Sealed tube bottom with rag to get strong suction from bottom of tube.2. Rinsed tube out with water inserted up bottom end of tube with propane valve closed.3. Let torch dry in hot sun light for two days.4. Verified tube completely dry.5. Tested piezo self starter which showed good spark when viewed from bottom of tube.6. Inspected tube with flash light. Tube inside looked clear.7. Flipped black tube handle upside down and opened propane valve completely.8. Used sewing straight pin for hemming to verify valve body propane hole not plugged.9. Poured about 2 ounces of rubbing alcohol down propane hole to remove any moisture and verified that rubbing alcohol flowed through propane valve body freely.10. Let rubbing alcohol evaporate.11. Replaced natural material gasket at female end of torch with a synthetic non flaking gasket from a propane bottle long term storage stop leak cap.12. Attached a brand new propane bottle to torch and verified no leaks.13. Attempted to start torch in wind free garage. Torch would go out every time about one second after lit.14. Decided to experiment with reducing air flow into tube by taping off two out of four air entry holes at base of black handle. Got torch to stay lit about three seconds.15. Taped off all four air entry holes below black handle.16. Got torch to light and stay lit about twenty seconds.17. Used torch to burn weeds for about thirty seconds.18. Opened two out of four air entry holes. Torch ran continuously without going out but was operating too hot for tube. Torch used for about two minutes. My experiment resulted in the torch being too hot and overheating tube beyond designed safety temperature. Torch bottom melted off. See photos.19. Completely disassembled propane valve and took photos and wrote up this review.Comment to seller:Good service. Quick service. Five star rating. I believe the torch was an authentic Bernzomatic torch. Manufacturing date numbers on valve body of 17850 0217.Comment to Bernzomatic:I think you have some problems that you should check into: improve user manual to include re-lighting details and troubleshooting details, design of product, manufacturing quality control, and verify that some Chinese company is not impersonating your product on Amazon and selling garbage. I would also suggest that you get your customer service to provide swap out service promptly rather than provide guesses as to what may be wrong. The user manual should be improved to give clear safety instructions including eye protecting against overheated exploding rocks, detailed troubleshooting steps, and detailed cleaning and servicing instructions. You should provide refurbishment service or replacement regardless of whether product is bought online or in a retail store. Poor customer service!Comment to buyer:I would not take a risk on this product no matter how many good write ups you read. I did some research online and decided to buy a Harbor Freight weed burning torch by Greenwood item number 91037. Good result when using. Nice design features. Price less than Bernzomatic torch. I bought an adapter for the Greenwood torch hose to go from a 20 pound propane tank to a one pound throw away propane tank for fifteen dollars. I may get a belt clip to hang the one pound propane bottle on my belt.I hope this long review helps everyone out.

Good tool ... kills weeds and not nearby plants. Works well better in calm conditions although turning gas valve up will have it still work. Some weeds like Spotted sandmat may regrow from roots or underground seeds.. just repeat. No stooping even for a 185 cm guy.

I used the torch for killing weeds between my interlock stones. Works well and lights easily. You have to play a little with the flow of the propane to get it the pressure just right but only takes a couples of tries to figure out. Sometimes too little or too much but once it gets set it should run without fussing with it.Definitely worth the money to save your time and more importantly saving your back from being bent over with sore muscles. Just walk and point the flame.Remember to use closed toe shoes and be mindful of where the flame is pointed.

I bought this product to help clean up the grass and weeds growing in the rock garden, it looked great when I was done. I use it around the edge of the drive way and flowerbeds as well.It’s a little hard on the neck and back seeing is that it is not a very speedy process. It’s kind of like (but not really) watering your weeds with a flame. It’s a little annoying sometimes when it continuously goes out and I have to reignite it. It would be nice if there was a trigger on the handle and not half way down the pipe.I’ve used this product almost weekly this summer and have used more than 20 little tanks. (Some last longer than others (it’s frustrating)) some tanks seem to go on forever and I have come to expect that they all should last in the very least 70-90 minutes.The best thing about using this product is that I don’t have to get all the way down on my hands and knees with a knife or scraper to take out the weeds in between the interlocking bricks, removing some of the soil in the process. This leaves the driveway and walkways clean and rid of weeds.

This works great to kill weeds in my unilock pavers. Lights with just one flick of the switch. I was out there today for well over an hour with a 1lb propane tank and there is still propane remaining - how much I’m not sure. I am going to buy an adapter hose though so I can hook up my 20 lb bbq tank. Using this sure beats pulling by hand or using chemicals I have a small dog that lies on the patio so Roundup is out of the question.
