Formed in Zurich, Switzerland in 1983, Coroner were originally roadies for fellow Swiss avant garde thrashers, Celtic Frost. In fact, Frost frontman Tom G Warrior sang vocals on the bands demo, ‘Death Cult’. Signing to Germany’s Noise Records in 1987 the band produced five albums for the label over the next nine years – R.I.P., Punishment For Decadence, No More Colour, Mental Vortex and Grin. Starting out from the 80’s thrash scene the band’s sound soon progressed to encompass elements of classical, avant-garde, prog, jazz and industrial and their increasingly complex style pf progressive rock-infused thrash garnered them the nickname, “the Rush of thrash metal”. The cult status of the band lead them to reform in 2011 where they have toured the globe, playing major festivals in between releasing a career spanning DVD, documenting the history of the band. They are scheduled to release a new album, their first in 22 years, later this year. Coroner’s fifth and final album for Noise Records was Grin and was originally released in 1993. This album saw the band move even further forward with sonic diversity and encapsulated a more groove lead sound with industrial elements, which were popular during the mid-nineties. It’s songs were longer, more complex and the most experimental the band have ever written. Grin is a technical marvel and in ’96 was risky and very ahead of its time which has led to it being hailed, posthumously as an innovative classic of its genre.

This band need discovering
All of the coroner re-issues are excellent but this one for me is the best of the bunch, vocally coroner remind me of Celtic frost but it’s the guitar work that really stands out, excellent riffs and solo work,I would also say that if ‘grin’ came out today it would still sound ahead of its time..

Classic Thrash
A classic album must be in the collection, an excellent edition on two records. The sound is very good, and the color is nice))

Celtic Frost meets Therapy?
This particular Coroner album reminds me of Tom G Warrior singing for Therapy in parts. A more alternative style that previous albums. I actually think this is better suited to the limited vocals.

Awful follow up to Mental Vortex
I'm not a huge Coroner fan yet I really did like Mental Vortex a lot! It is a great heavy metal album. I have some earlier stuff that is more in the realm of thrash metal and it didn't appeal to me but it is what it is and I do respect the band for what they do and who they are. And since this was the album they released after Mental Vortex I thought "this could be an interesting progressive metal album" But was I WRONG! This is not progressive, this is not even metal. This sounds like a group of guys sitting in a basement smoking pot and playing around with guitars and drums. I cant take this seriously at all and I would give the disc away but I don't know anyone who would want it. Guess it will sit and collect dust until I throw it out. Worst cd I purchased in a long time. Don't waste your money.

2018 remasters - good photos, not so improved/different audio
My favorite Coroner album, but If you have the original discs, stick with them and skip these reissues. There’s a bit less low bass and increased midrange eq’ing in these remasters when compared to the original masters... usually it’s the other way around with remastered versions. The additional photos of memorabilia in the booklets are neat, but if you still own the original noise records releases, they’re the better sounding discs.
