## Description

In his distinguished career as a Hollywood photographer, Bob Willoughby captured Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Fonda, but remains unequivocal about his favorite subject: Audrey Kathleen Ruston, later Edda van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston, best known as Audrey Hepburn. Willoughby was called in to shoot the new starlet one morning shortly after she arrived in Hollywood in 1953. It was a humdrum commission for the portraitist often credited with having perfected the photojournalistic movie still, but when he met the Belgian-born beauty, Willoughby was enraptured. “She took my hand like… well a princess, and dazzled me with that smile that God designed to melt mortal men’s hearts,” he recalled. As Hepburn’s career soared following her Oscar-winning US debut in Roman Holiday, Willoughby became a trusted friend, framing her working and home life. His historic, perfectionist, tender photographs seek out the many facets of Hepburn’s beauty and elegance, as she progresses from her debut to her career high of My Fair Lady in 1963. Willoughby’s studies, showing her on set, preparing for a scene, interacting with actors and directors, and returning to her private life, comprise one of photography’s great platonic love affairs and an unrivalled record of one of the 20th century’s touchstone beauties.

Review: "Fairies never quite disappear altogether" - This is a wonderful book of photographs from photographer Bob Willoughby. With 280 pages, measuring 248 x 308 x 34mm and weighing 2.2kg, this is a substantial and very well produced book. After a foreward from Willoughby, the book is divided into eight chapters. Each chapter has a memorable quotation from either Audrey or a person close to her. Audrey's best is perhaps "As a child, I was taught that it was bad manners to bring attention to yourself, and to never, ever make a spectacle of yourself...All of which I've earned a living doing." And, Hubert de Givenchy said "She was an enchantress, inspiring love and beauty. And fairies never quite disappear altogether." What a true statement that is. Whenever text appears in the book - which is not very often - it is written in three languages. Not ideal, but I suppose the book is aimed at a worldwide audience. One issue with book is that there are no annotations or remarks written in throughout it (apart from the quotations relating to Audrey). Although this makes it wonderful to look at the photos on clear pages, it would have been helpful to have some information as you go through. All the photo information is at the back of the book, and it is displayed clearly, although the text is rather small. It does mean you find yourself flicking to the back of the book to find out more information about each photo. The book is divided into eight chapters: "Paramount Studios 1953", "Audrey And Ip 1958", "Green Mansions 1958", "The Children's Hour 1961", "At The Home 1961", "Paris When It Sizzles 1962", "My Fair Lady 1963" and "Two For The Road 1966". Each section contains mainly black and white photos, although there are also some colour ones. The majority are single page, but in addition there are wonderful double page images. The photographs cover images of Audrey getting make-up, measuring costumes, relaxing on and off set, talking with her co-stars, and also at home with her husband and children. Overall, there is great variety in the photos, and you really feel you learn more about the fun-loving character of Audrey. The best photo is probably when Audrey takes "Ip" - a young fawn - into a supermarket. She had the fawn to familiarise herself with it for the shooting of "Green Mansions". Audrey makes it look so normal shopping with a young fawn! There are many wonderful photos of Audrey from her iconic "My Fair Lady" movie, and this is by far the longest chapter in the book. A notable image is a wonderful double page colour spread of Audrey at the races shouting for her horse to win. An iconic and amusing photo. Needless to say, all the photos are very clear quality, and the book is printed on very thick quality paper. Overall, this is a must-have book for any Audrey fan, and anyone interested in movies from the 1950's or 1960's would also find it tremendously informative. First is "Paramount Studios 1953"
Review: A book any Audrey Hepburn fan will want to own. - If you are a fan of Audrey Hepburn you will love this book. If you are a fan of films stills photography you will love this book. If you love both you will be in your element. There is no question Bob Willoughby was a very good photographer who does not get the credit he deserves.
