Victorinox Swiss Army Classic Pocket Knife (Silver Alox)

This review is for the Alox version (aluminum scales instead of plastic)... This knife is missing the toothpick and tweezers when compared to the regular version with plastic scales. But what you get instead is a knife that is only ONE HALF as thick! 99.9% of the functionality of this knife is in the 3 main tools (rather than the toothpick or tweezers). This thing is so amazingly slender that you can carry it around in your front pocket all day every day and never even feel that it is there. It will not rub in an irritating way like most things carried in pockets. Also, it will not show a lump in your pants. The fine aluminum scales look sleek and elegant and are even suitable for engraving. The scales are well textured without being abrasive and provide a secure, comfortable grip. It is perfect as an executive pocket knife. It is also the perfect pocket companion for people who don't want or like to carry a pocket knife, but still may need to open a package or envelope, trim a loose thread, clean a fingernail or turn a screw once in a while. Let's face it, tool use is what sets us apart from the beasts. Mine has been carried daily for 7 years and still looks perfectly new. I sharpen it when needed and it will shave hair. With this great pocket companion at hand, my life is made a little easier and more pleasant each day. My preference for this version is not a criticism of the standard plastic Classic knife, of which I have several. That is also a great product. I just feel that the Alox version takes a great concept to its ultimate refinement. If they tripled the price, I would still be a fan. [update:] Carried daily now for 13 years and still as happy as ever with this great tool. One of the best purchases of my life. The only time I don't carry it is when I fly in a commercial airliner, where it is not allowed. I missed having it so much that I took another Victorinox Classic and sawed the knife blade off so I could carry that. [July 2016, update 2:] I have carried this particular one now daily for going on 16 years. Counting previous ones owned, I am an owner for 34 years. Still as much of a fan as ever. I have replaced the scissor spring in my current one twice now. Inexpensive and easy. I just sharpened it up again and it works better than new and looks the same also (photo attached). I never stop finding uses for it on an almost daily basis. The scissors comes in handy for cutting packages open, clipping hangnails, grooming hairs, snipping threads, removing hang tags, and along with the file, can repair a broken fingernail. The screwdriver fits slot head and the common #2 Phillips head screws. It is also good for prying and can clean under fingernails. I recommend squaring off the polished tip by touching it to a grinder (or filing it). The knife can cut cord, open boxes or envelopes, etc. I can't really overstate what a nice, useful, easily carried item this is. I have tried several other small multi-tool devices thinking they would be even more useful, but none can match the efficiency of this one.

I love that this tiny knife has scissors and a file. The alox feels like a quality in a tiny, super lightweight package. The scissors steal the show. They're small but sharp and surprisingly useful. I have zero regrets on this purchase.

Compact and rugged with the steel exterior for the side plates. Of course Swiss Army knifes cost a little more, but the size of this knife and their reputation makes this a perfect knife to keep on my keychain

This is a QUALITY, well made and designed little knife. Although it lacks the tweezers & toothpick of many similar pocket knives it is excellent. ADVANTAGES: * It is only about 1/2 to 2/3rds the weight similar knives. It may feel "cheap" to some because case is made of what seems to be aircraft grade aluminum alloy. This is why it is so light weight and so nice in a pocket! IF you doubt the sturdiness of this unit, open the tools and try to bend the case. It is STRONG. Unless you really apply a GREAT amount of pressure you cannot even slightly distort it. * It is much thinner than similar knives, as it does not have the toothpick & tweezers, nor bulky combo plastic and steel case. * Great styling -- I usually am not impressed by fashion or "styling", but this little gem says "Professional", it is not plastic looking or glitzy neon preppy garbage. * Blades are strong and screwdriver can actually be USED as a screwdriver, nail file works okay, and knife blade is as sharp as it needs to be as it will cut through plastic, nylon or fiber cord easily with minimal fraying, even cuts type III paracord easily. (I did sharpen the knife blade as I like sharper one, but that is personal preference.) It also has a nice point for nail cleaning, although if you sharpen you have to be a bit more careful using it for this function. * The scissors actually work well, both for trimming finger nails and cutting paper. Many similar knives fail at one of these being improperly angled or mis-aligned. * Riveting of the unit is tight and very smooth & professional. DRAWBACK: * This little knife is somewhat expensive, but you get quality, still, I think it is a bit overpriced so downgraded by one star. Other than price -- OUTSTANDING product.

A high quality, well designed everyday carry tool for any man or woman. Open packages and letters, fix the occasional finger nail issue, and trim those pesky threads on your clothes. Compact and functional.

I purchased the stainless steel classic design because I needed a second pair in my vehicle and it has been very handy. I first purchase one at a high end store in the mall about 20 years ago and it still looks great after using it once a week for all those years and opening boxes etc. The blade is still very sharp so are the fold down scissors,. The only thing I have to do is replace the spring coil about 4 to 5 years and that’s easy to do just push it out with the end of a paper clip and it will fit perfectly to remove the old or broken spring and just put the new replacement in place and push it in with small bottom nose pliers or whatever can reach in the space to clamp it in. As a man I wanted a product that would be sturdy enough to last and remain my go to fingernail TRIMER as it is very precise. When this stainless steel style first came out it was great because the older plastic cover trimmer with the toothpick kept breaking in half exposing the blade elements after only 6 months and those I do not recommend. So because of the high quality and design I have gifted many of the classic stainless steel and the men are all thankful for the lasting gift. I strongly recommend this men’s heirloom trimmer to continue its journey. Please buy the 5 replacement springs for future use. I’m on my last spring and will purchase more as well. I have had many Swiss Army Knives over the years and have: (a) Used them extensively for hiking and fishing in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest; (b) used them in the office and traveling; and, (3) given them frequently as gifts. I have never been disappointed by the line. But I must say, of all the knives, the most useful has been the small Swiss Army Classic Pocket Knife which has been a constant companion -- replaced several times -- over the last 30 years. It is stylish and slim enough to be pocketed with a suit and packed with my briefcase. On the other hand, it is very durable and -- amazingly over all these years and having replaced at least 5 of them -- consistently of high quality. If I have any concern it is how easily they are lost or walk away being so small and attractive. This is not a knife for the rugged outdoors or to take fishing. But it is a khife that one can keep as a constant companion for the little tasks that come up in everyday life. It is the kind of knife you will bring with you because it is so light and convenient. It creates no buldges and really is almost unnoticed until you need it. It is also a great gift -- affordable and at the same time of high quality. It is definitely a small star in the knife world.

I love Victorinox products, they are always sharp and long lasting. This is no exception. The sharpness is no joke I have cut straight through things that shouldn't be able to be cut through. It is very practical and every sane person should have one. The scissors are also an appreciated addition. The metal frame is stylish and high quality, I feel like a million bucks carrying this. It's also a perfect gift for the men in your life. (SERIOUSLY BUY ANY MAN THIS AS A GIFT) (they will love you). However keep in mind it doesn't come with tweezers.

Not bad for under £20. It's very slim and only about 2" long so ideal for attaching to your keys. As it's the alox version its also robust and hardwearing. I highly recommend Victorinox SAK's and have had several. On first impression it seemed a little flimsy due to thinness and small size but with it being alox should be sturdy enough for its intended purpose of a small keyring knife. This one has a small knife that would be ideal to open boxes or envelopes and has a nice sharp pair of scissors that come in handy if you work in an office. The nail file is less useful for me but it includes a flat head screwdriver that is 2mm wide and could also be used as a small prybar. Mine came inside a small plastic (pleather) pouch in a little jiffy bag.
