While it works perfectly, the plastic housing feels a bit light and not as rugged as I expected. I’d be cautious using it in rough conditions due to the plastic clip on the rear. Overall, a solid and functional weather radio with excellent reception. Just wish it felt a little more durable.

Great basic home radio

I bought this radio primarily because I was looking for an inexpensive weather radio to keep at my summer home, where storms can be frequent and harmful. And in that respect this radio works. It picks up the local weather band forecasts and serves my purpose. But as a radio, focusing on AM and FM it falls way short of what I expected. First, AM. While many people don’t rely on AM very much, I am still a fan. As an AM receiver, this is definitely lower quality. It has a hard enough time picking up local broadcasts. If you are trying to use it to pick up distant broadcasts as I often do at night listening to baseball, it falls very short of the mark, unlike my vintage analog Radio Shack model. I’m sure the culprit is a very small AM ferrite antenna, although I’m not even interested in opening the case to find out. The DSP tuner has next to no selectivity. FM benefits from the whip antenna, but the selectivity issue rears its ugly head here too with bleed through all over the dial. And range is also limited but the noise on the band isn’t. As for sound quality, it’s bad even by cheap imported radio standards. The weather band is fine since most of that is computer generated anyway but for everyday listening, this does a less than satisfactory job with both music and talk. Overall, for the $9 I paid, it serves its purpose. And since I have so many other radios to choose from, this will end up a dedicated weather receiver. Would I buy another one? No. This is a $9 radio that plays like a $4 radio. There are many better choices out there for just a few dollars more.
