Will this set in wall brackets like old days

I think they are a bit to heavy for the wall bracket idea. I would look for just a little bit shorter and lighter weight set of lamps for what you are trying to create.

Does the top of wick have to be wet with oil? Or dry?

Just pour the oil in, the wick will soak up the right amount. I’ve never worried about whether it’s wet or dry because either way it will start the burn when lit. The wick will fuel itself as long as there’s oil in the vase.
