It is a sturdy metal base with tightly fixed gems that have a very authentic shine. Once I started wearing it, I was concerned about the weight as my scalp can be sensitive but after a few minutes I forgot I was even wearing it. I was also happy to see that the tiara has loops at the ends so you can secure it if needed but I have not needed to. I can tilt my head a fair amount without it falling off and the tiara has already survived several drops onto linoleum floors (I'm clumsy). All in all I am extremely happy with this product and will continue to rock my awesome tiara whenever the occasion strikes me.
