If I put this in my car - will it absorb embarrasing fart smells before others get in and complain about the smell?

Nope! It doesn't do much at all especially not in a contained area with a scent like that. Open the windows and pretend the smell is something outside permiating into the car.

why does the product description say that it works on human decay?

I think they say that's what it was designed for, not the purpose of the product for amazon consumers (or at least I hope not!). Putrescine, apparently, is the name of the chemical released when the body decomposes, and the bad air sponge was designed to absorb it.

How long are these lasting for you?

I took them out of the jar and they lasted two months before I started to notice the effectiveness was decreasing, so I used another reviewer's tip and cut them in half at the point where they had shrunk down the most and discovered a little more active goo in the middle. I figure I might get a third month out of them.

Has anyone used this to eliminate lingering diesel fuel odors?

Yes - Try the commercial packaged Bad Air Sponge it is the same product, but comes in larger sizes to accommodate larger odor problems (2lb., 5lb., 7lb. & 35lb pails). I seen it at my local county waste water treatment plant.
