Why does my Gardena leak from the control box

I agree with the other answers listed here. But another way (rather than diver lube) is pipe tape. It is cheap and "fills" in the spacing between the threads. Wind the tape - two or three times around - in the direction that you will be screwing the Gardena adapter on. So to recap - replace washer, check plastic for cracks (on both items), and use pipe tape.

Can I use these on the end of a hose, so I can rapidly swap sprayer nozzles, with other end of the hose attached to spigot as normal?

yes, you can BUT shut off your water supply valve before you do, I use a simple on-off, valve on hose end to save steps, rather than walking back and forth

when ad states that is works with 5/8 and 1/2 it's only referring to the connector, not the hose... correct??

It is the hose diameter. The most common residential size is 5/8. The diameter determine the flow rate. The connectors will be standard and will fit the hose you have. It's basically saying anything over 5/8 you will not get the higher flow rate or pressure.
