## Description

"Under Milk Wood" is Dylan Thomas' undisputed and unforgettable masterpiece - an affectionate, but hilarious portrait of a small Welsh town. The classic 1954 recording, featuring a perfect cast led by Richard Burton as 'First Voice', is rightly considered to be definitive. This collection also includes two earlier radio programmes: "Return Journey to Swansea" and "Quite Early One Morning", read by Dylan Thomas and others. Enjoyable in their own right, they also provide a fascinating insight into the process that led towards "Under Milk Wood".

    Greatest English poet....

Not of all time but certainly the greatest word spinner of the 20th century. A man drunk on words as well as beer and love spinning some of the finest phrases in the world's greatest language, words so beautiful and apt they can be quoted by people who would laugh at the idea they loved poetry. And this play for voices...I heard it when first broadcast and loved it immediately, bought the first issue on LP (now alas lost during house moves),listened over the years to every version and now have the CD of the first broadcast. And I love it,I play it and replay it and it is better every time. I wonder what Thomas might have produced had he?But perhaps we should simply bathe in the beautiful voices (especially Burton as First voice and Griffiths as Captain, although there are magical lilts and superb clarity everywhere)....I love it.I wish I could write just one page this good......

The most wonderful use of the English tongue, delivered with warm well rounded Welsh accents.

I vaguely remember hearing this production sometime, somewhere, long ago in my childhood. Until listening to it now I had not appreciated how beautifully, subtle, and hilariously funny the wording used by Dylan Thomas was. He manages to paint the characters within our heads most beautifully often using just a word or two from them, cleverly woven into Richard Burton's description of events which he delivers in almost mesmerizing tones. No wonder Elizabeth Taylor fell for him, (several times). For those who may wonder if this production has aged let me reassure them that it certainly has, and most beautifully. This recording not only reminds us of the brilliance of the writing of Dylan Thomas but of the ability of truly professional actors to convey not only the words, but the underlying subtleties they represent. I doubt that many of today's actors could ever match them.If you already know the work, look no further - and if you don't, you are in for a real treat. Best enjoyed when you have the time and the peaceful surroundings in which to absorb the atmosphere. Turn on, sit back and immerse yourself in the little town of Llareggub, pausing just long enough to wonder why Dylan Thomas gave it that name.

I bought this because I remembered hearing it when at school, I've always been a fan of Mr, Burton couldn't resist.
