Popeye Volume 3: Let's You and Him Fight! (POPEYE HC)

I bought this for my husband who is a fan of Popeye. He got all the volumes from this series and is looking forward to the latest addition, I believe is coming out in November?

E.C.Segar is one of the geniuses of early newspaper comic strips. His ultimate invention, Thimble Theatre, gave us such characters as the Oyl family; Castor and the marvel that is Olive Oyl. But the emergence of Popeye in the strip eventually made everyone supplementary. Segar had a grand narrative ability, a simple but evocative visual style, great gags, and a proclivity for epic tales and fantasy. Swee’Pea, the Sea Hag, the Goons (most notably Alice), the Jeep and the illustrious Wimpy. This is one of the most charming and amusing strips of the golden age of the strip. And these large volumes are a perfect vehicle with which to revisit this marvelous invention of the human imagination.

This is the third volume of Fantagraphics Books series that intends to reprint the complete run of E.C. Segar's Popeye comic strip. This book reprints the black and white daily strips from June 9, 1932 to December 9, 1933 and the Sunday color strips from October 9, 1932 to November 26, 1933, plus advertising comic strips promoting the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago. Major events include the first appearances of Sweet Pea and Bluto, with this being Bluto's ONLY appearance in the strip during Segar's lifetime, although Bluto did have a long career in the cartoons. These are great comics and they are well reproduced here. The only bad thing about the book is the introduction by Donald Phelps, which is continued from Volume 2. It is boring and often incomprehensible. Skip the into and enjoy the comics.
