Field Guide to the Birds of Ecuador (Helm Field Guides)

the new go-to guide for Ecuador
Choosing a favorite field guide is a subjective endeavor, but I can't imagine another trip to Ecuador without this guide. Yes, its bulk is not insignificant, but the only compact guide for the country necessarily skimps on plumage variations and accompanying text.

Just a couple quibbles.
Just a couple quibbles. The maps try to pack too much detail into a small area, like the Guayaquil and Esmereldas areas, giving the appearance of being a location where a species is found. Also some of the illustrations have funky lines outlining species, an example is the Capped Heron.Otherwise a 5 star guidebook.

Five Stars
good book and reasonable size considering the number of birds it needs to detail.

A birder/natural history traveler needs only this book for Ecuador
A brilliant up to date taxonomy of the birds and most common mammals in a compact form.. Clear easier to read range maps and equally easy to distinguish plates to better identify species.. Especially brilliant for Hummingbirds, tanagers the "antthings" so easily confused in earlier field guides.. For that matter, it is outstanding on all the families.Truly the one book that is a must for amateurs or hard core bird folks traveling and birding this wonderful nation. Thank you gentlemen for this wonderful guide.

Birds of Ecuador Field Guide
Comprehensive field guide of mainland Ecuador birds, and that is very good. Nothing about Galapagos birds. On some drawings the colours are too vivid when compared to photographs of the same bird.

Libro indispensable si vas a Ecuador a ver o fotografiar aves
Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Comprehensive and up to date
Illustrations of every mainland Ecuador species. Drawings seem accurate although it is always difficult to get the exact same colours as the real-life birds. Maps, drawings and text on same page is very useful in the field. Book is heavy, but with 1600 species, it would be hard to make it lighter... Very useful to any birder travelling to Ecuador.
