Computer Organization and Architecture (9th Edition) (William Stallings Books on Computer and Data Communications)

Decent Product
It's a decent book for what can otherwise be made a very in depth topic. This book is quite easy to understand, quick to the point, and not dense or too theoretical. It has less content than most of my high school textbooks. It is one of those few textbooks that I can say that I'm able to follow every word. You are a fortunate student if your professor elected to use this textbook.

More good than bad I think
I was absolutely shocked as to the amount of information presented in what is one of the smaller computer science books in my collection. The information is packed quite densely, which is not necessarily a bad thing, it cuts a lot of the fluff found in other textbooks. To cover computer organization and architecture in a single book is a monumental task, its difficult to make assumptions about what students do and don't know, so I take my hat off to the author, I think this book does a good job of covering the important topics without treating the reader like either a novice or an expert.I did find the book to be unbalanced at times (switching from novice to advanced topics and then back again), but I believe this to be a fundamental problem with trying to teach an advanced subject such as computer organization and architecture, each topic is dependent on some understanding of another. Its up to the student to digest as much as they can and then return to the earlier chapters later to fill in the gaps.I am disappointed by the questions, like some of the other reviewers I have found some quality control issues with the questions or examples and that the questions are often asked in a way that is either difficult to understand or doesn't seem to follow on from the material presented in the chapter.I write software every day (what would be considered high level software, really not what this book is focused on), and this book has given me a depth and insight into computers that I previously did not have, an understanding of their structure and inner workings at a fundamental level. It has made my job both more fun and interesting. It has some flaws around examples and questions, as mentioned by other reviewers and myself but the actual content is quite good.

DO NOT BUY unless you need this specific edition!!!
BEWARE BEWARE - if you should be buying the full hardcover edition of this book for a course, buy that one! This edition is less expensive for a reason, it leaves out an entire chapter (ch 15) along with other bits and pieces. After that, I give this book only two stars because the way it's written is not easy to read. It's loaded with acronyms (welcome to computer design), figures and tables. The figures and tables are not placed in the text along with the reading material, they are often a page or two different, so you have to flip pages constantly if you want to see the figure that goes along with what you are reading about. More than one star because the information is thorough and accurate.I was given the ISBN number of the full hardcover text by our course syllabus, and Amazon showed me this book as an alternate. They are not exactly the same! Hopefully you read this review before you took the course. Good luck!

This book was a waste of time to read
This book was used for our intro level computer architecture class for some reason. Personally, I thought the book was filled with technical jargon that made the book difficult to read. The author had a tendency to ramble, when the point could have been conveyed concisely. The examples didn't have solutions for you to check your work, so it was a guessing game for if I understood a concept correctly.

The organization of this book is awful. It's unfortunate that it was required. Often it would pose a question about something but would never describe the process of solving a particular problem. Overall poorly written, the author gets away with this book primarily because there are so few options.
