James Beard Award winner * New York Times bestseller Learn Korean cooking alongside social media star Sarah Ahn as her umma passes down 100+ family recipes and decades' worth of kitchen wisdom. Sarah Ahn’s viral food videos of her and her mom have captivated millions of viewers with their behind-the-scenes look at Korean cooking and multigenerational home life. This collaboration is now a must-have cookbook blending the emotional intimacy of Crying in H Mart with practical culinary advice from Nam Soon’s lifetime of kitchen experience. The recipes are framed by mother-daughter conversations that are funny, profound, and universally relatable—plus all the food is backed by the recipe-testing power of America’s Test Kitchen. Thorough ingredient guide: Walk through a Korean grocery store with a Korean umma for in-depth guidance on what pantry ingredients and fresh produce and protein to buy. Recipes both traditional and contemporary: Learn to make everything from simple banchan, a variety of kimchi, and foundational stews to an assortment of yasik (midnight snacks) and inventive desserts. Kitchen wisdom from mother to daughter: Shared confidences open a window onto a level of family intimacy rarely seen in cookbooks. The Ahns understand that when generations come together in the kitchen, so much is shared: not only food, but also knowledge, advice, family history, and love. Review: Wonderful Korean cookbook. Great discussiin of family culture as well - I'm very excited about this cookbook. Great recipes with detailed instruction. There's beautiful photography, amazing recipes. Every time I see Sarah's podcast on you tube I've been saying I wish they would do a cookbook. Here it is. Review: Superior guide to authentic technique. - This cookbook might be a little too technical for most folks that want to experiment with Korean cuisine, however it is worth the purchase for the pictures, tutorials, guides, and historical background. If you never cook from it at all, it still stands as a remarkable book for its reference value. I personally prefer the ease and availability of ingredients in the cookbook Banchan, but those flavors are much more American because they lack some of the specialty items you need to do it right. Instead, I take the recipe and prep from Banchan and enhance it with any missing ingredients or simpler prep steps I read in Umma. This works beautifully. For added authenticity— I made acorn jelly from Umma and as I was purchasing the ingredients the shopkeeper at my local Asian market asked me if I was part Korean or had lived in Korea because I was buying exactly the right things. So there you go.

An authentic heartfelt story through food
Excellent book. Well written, jam-packed with thorough recipes, good organization, beautiful pictures and thoughtful, heartfelt stories…what more can you ask for in a cookbook. The author’s mom’s strong independent spirit reminds me of my ex-boyfriend’s (now good friend) late mom. The latter’s was a sad love story with an American GI who suffered a mental breakdown and left the family when they arrived in the US. Anyway, this book is an authentic look into the lives of working class immigrants making a life in Los Angeles that speaks to me, not the Kdrama, K-pop culture of today. I’m Gen X and this really takes me back to the ‘90s…bittersweet. After spending over $200 at the Korean supermarket on pantry ingredients and 8 successful banchans, I can safely say, this book is the real deal…buy it! Note: I cut the sugar and Dasida beef stock powder by half and everything still turned out delicious. For the stir-fried potatoes, I cooked it a total of 4min instead of her 6min for a crunchier bite.

Korean American Approved. Easy and delicious (out of this world) recipes.
As a Korean American who grew up half my life in Korea and the other half in the US, I am absolutely in love with this book. Not only is it simple, but it's very informative. Not to mention that the recipes are absolutely incredible. Since I've started cooking with "Umma", I truly feel like I can open a Korean restaurant haha. thank you so much for such an amazing cookbook! I have purchased another copy as a gift to my non-Korean friend.

Love this cookbook!
Greatly formatted. On top of all the recipes, there are recommended pantry ingredient lists, common prep methods, insightful stories, and communicated love of this mother and daughter pair.
