Review: A beautiful story that is worth every penny - This is such a short and yet extremely powerful book; Backman starts off the book by explaining how he came to write this story and I feel this makes it all the more powerful. Backman has a way of writing wherein he just puts his complete heart and soul into his words and it really leaps off the pages; especially with this one and that opening line! Whilst it's a short story you still have no idea of where the plot is going or what is happening until the end. This book is a really poignant tale about what we would do for others; those we love and those we barely know. There are illustrations throughout this book that really add to the story and really make this book something more special. Whilst this is a very short book it is still one I loved and the design is delightful. I think I could read anything by him and love it. Review: Short and sweet but overpriced - This is a very short novella by the popular Scandinavian 'feel good' author Frederik Backman. It's a nice little festive themed - but not cheerful - story, about a man who wants to make a deal with Death. There are elements of 'It's a Wonderful Life' and 'A Christmas Carol'. It's too short to really get into or have any large emotional impact in the way that some of his novels can, but it's a pleasant little diversion. It would probably sit better in a collection with a few other short stories, and perhaps one day it will. If you like Backman's style, you'll probably enjoy it - but at £4.99 it is extremely expensive for such a short book. If you can get it cheaply and enjoy Backman's books then it's probably worth it. I'm not sure shelling out so much money for such a short story is really worth it, even for a good writer like Backman is. ## Images ![The Deal of a Lifetime: From the New York Times Bestselling Author of My Friends, A Man Called Ove and Anxious People - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/91tFhM-6RwL.jpg) ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A beautiful story that is worth every penny *by A***K on 27 December 2020* This is such a short and yet extremely powerful book; Backman starts off the book by explaining how he came to write this story and I feel this makes it all the more powerful. There is only a development of the main character, hurriedly attempting to set the story in context. It’s impact was not as profound on me like the other reviewers. I will read it again and see what I take from it then. I think I enjoyed the illustrations more than the book, I wonder if that says more about me than the nook itself? --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.sn/products/66317447-the-deal-of-a-lifetime-from-the-new-york-times](https://www.desertcart.sn/products/66317447-the-deal-of-a-lifetime-from-the-new-york-times) --- *Product available on Desertcart Senegal* *Store origin: SN* *Last updated: 2026-10-10*
