Just checking out this Inkling: not an author I'll return too
Good story: Williams at his best. Though he's too much into the white magic stuff for me to become a fan of his. I just wanted to try a book and see.

Great work from 'the other inkling'
Charles Williams was a member of the 'inklings' - that famous group of medeveilists at oxford that included Lewish and Tolkien - his personal beliefs were an odd, sometimes contradictory combination of mysticism and Anglicanism which is often woven into his tales. They read like thrillers- which they are- but have depth. This story is about some unscrupulous men who purchase, and plan to market a stone from the crown of Sulimen , which has magical powers- and the consequences that occur when they do.

Confusingly interesting.
A man of letters must have written this. Someone who knows and takes a lot of words to explain a concept.. I found the story interesting, but long and boring to an extreme. Needed clarification on what happened to Chloe.

Williams is great, this digital edition is pretty crappy though. Get the book.
Charles Williams is the master of Christian suspense. I especially like how he is able to relate the gospel to the average man caught up in the affairs of the archetypical types. But Amazon did a lousy job in creating this book; tons of typos. It really helps to know the written version by heart first. My advice is, get the book

A supernatural thriller
This is an adventure with a rare but timeless theme. Funny, literate, magical, and challenging. The characters are complex and reflect our human potentials for goodness , mediocrity, beauty, selfishness, and occasional heroism.

Good as I remembered
I read this book about 40 years ago. I loved it then and still do.

Like C.S. Lewis
Everyone should read Charles Williams, especially Christians; he will really make you think.

If you'd like 'theological mysteries'
Charles Williams is not for everyone, but he is a wonderful writer and his 'theological mysteries' are always interesting. I like him very much.

Many Dimensions - didn't finish it, will have another go later
Having heard about this book on a radio review programme, I had to have it. Most disappointing. Plot superb, but how can the book be so boring? Am I missing something in it? The language is stilted and does not flow, the characters stereotyped, cardboard and interminably verbose. Somewhat akin to H.G.Wells' Time Machine, the action becomes more and more outlandish (of course it does, it's fantasy) and I reached that dread point in a book when I'm not bothered what happens next.
