Will it mount on top of a arai rx7v?

Most probably. The mounting plate has a curved surface and with the very strong 3M adhesive pad, it will probably stay. But, I would stay away from Drift as they are not that good. I've had three of them (two were DOA from Amazon) one from a local bike shop, which stopped pairing with the phone and would not record anymore than 20s video before shutting down. I've since bought a Sony AS50 with rechargeable battery and very, very happy with the quality of the video, reliability and ease of use. Sorry for the long reply. I didn't have very good experience and wouldn't want you with the same issues.

Does this withstand being in a UK RAIN DOWNPOUR without any problems and still function without the extra clear water case ???

Bought this camera, mounted it on a motorcycle helmet, first ride out with the camera mounted was a downpour, camera was dead upon arrival after about 30-40mins ride. Had to return the camera and left a 1 star review. So from my experience the answer is categorically no.

How does the external mic attach?

You plug in the enclosed usb mic. adapter lead in the usb charging point on camera and Mic. plugs in the adapter lead

If using as a helmet cam, how do you know if you are recording or not as there is no remote available? Is there an obvious slide button or bleeps etc

Has a red light that flashes when filming. Setting up a automatic DVR is easy and you just need a single push of the on button to start. Look for the red light in your mirror to confirm? There is also a less distinct bleep.
