Murder By Numbers [VHS]

Overaii I liked it. Flowed well and kept a good pace. It was engaging, with good characters. I didn't give it a 5 star only because I like a bit more suspense and action. Good twist at the end so overall a good watch!

Well, Amazon confuses 'feisty' with 'professional', there are moments as the film goes on where 'maverick' might be the adjective, but that's usually reserved for blokes.This manages to avoid some of the tropes, flip others, and begins, Columbo-like, knowing who dunnit and the film is about the investigation, with a bit of angst, because even now they're struggling to create characters who haven't tragic backstories (like they're stereotypical D&D PCs).Plus Sandra Bullock is always watchable, giving a solid performance as a real person - which I really appreciate.

Positives; Has Sandra Bullock at its Lead... and early significant Ryan Gosling appearance.Negatives; Sadly too many cliches and stereotypes, like Cassie (Bullock) and Sam (Chaplin) falling unnecessarily into bed to try and drive a chemistry between them that doesn't actually exist.Bullock does her best with a weak predictable script that could have been so much more but wasn't. Gosling in particular shines with the little he had but in the end the movie fails to shine. Not a terrible movie but not a good one and I'm a fan of Sandra Bullock but she should have passed.

The main thing wrong with this is that none of the characters are very likeable. The main protagonist (Bullock) is a sex freak and constantly makes incompetent mistakes and acts emotionally. The love interest, the man that is her partner, has about the same amount of charisma as an old dead fish. The actors are given terrible lines and actions, they are being directed to be awful as there are many very good actors in this film. It all has a cheap straight to tv feel. The sound design is awful and resorts to cheesy sound fx when ever sandra bullock is thinking about some old case that for some reason she cannot forget about. She seems very weak and not a strong female hyena like she says. Although she is treated like a tough cookie she needs comfort sex, cookies, booze and constantly falls over and makes stupid mistakes like stepping in crap at a crime scene and whiping it on the floor. Is this a sexist film pretending to be feminist?I don't understand who is meant to be the likeable character I am meant to relate to. All of them are kinda gross and pathetic in their own way which makes the entire story hard to relate to. I think it is still average or above average simply because I am still watching it and it has kept me interested. I guess there are some original and intriguing elements to he script. The cinematography is nice. I like that there is some ambiguity about who is morally superior or more likeable. But its not played out right. I guess having the criminals as smart ass kids is also original. I am looking forward to the twists and turns. I think if the script had been in development for longer and had stronger more defined characters with proper goals, strength and weaknesses.. With some back story. It would really help as there is a lot of potential. Now I am just trying to find films on amazon that are not very average lol.
