Cheaply made, cheap sheath, but a must-have design for the garden
I almost returned this knife when I got it because the wooden handle had warped a bit, leaving a gap between the handle and the metal tang. But, I didn't return it because I used it in the garden almost immediately, and really liked how useful it was. The sheath, however, is basically crap: it is too narrow to slide the knife in easily (and without basically cutting the sheath on the serrated edge of the knife), so I just store it without a sheath in my garden bin outside. I also don't like how it is not good for left-handers, since I have to use the knife upside down if I want to quickly lop the heads off of weeds. But that is my problem and not most people's.The serrated side is sharp, but the plain edge is dull as a butter knife. You can sharpen this up if you want to; I found I don't need to since I always carry a sharper knife. The whetstone they provide is junk -- I don't recommend you use this on anything, really. It disintegrates into dust when used, and scratches the heck out of anything you use it on.If you can, I recommend getting a Hori Hori -- but maybe not this particular brand. You need the knife -- and a good one -- not all the bells and whistles offered here.

Dangerous Tool
I wish I could give this zero stars. I bought this tool for my husband and he used it to pull dandelions. The Stainless steel broke as he was pushing it through the earth. Luckily he was not injured. However, when I contacted this company they simply said it was only guaranteed for 30 days and would not respond to further emails. I received the tool the beginning of May and it was only used a few times and snapped the second week of June. There is a much better tool of this kind for a few dollars more by A.M. Leonard and has a better guarantee.

Wow what a big tool!
Ladies get your mind out of the gutter LOL. Seriously this tool is awesome I received it this morning and went metal detecting this afternoon it performed flawlessly and is of high quality absolutely fantastic and it should last a lifetime yes the sheath is a little tight but I would rather have it that way and I'm sure most guys would agree with me. It also serves as a decent weapon when you're going on those digs that you're unsure of the area. I carry a 45 on my side just in case but this tool is also nice to have as a backup, seriously

The Best Most Unique Tool I have
This Hori Hori Knife is the most useful tool I have and I have a huge number. Some are stainless steel Japanese tools. This tool is unique with the serrated edge on one side and trowel. It does so many things well. I have an especially horrible vine that climbs my ti plants and the serrated edge is wonderful as the vine actually wraps around the tis with circular root like structures. I can do the work I was doing with a pruning knife at least 3 time faster. The same is true of many difficult weeds. Some I have to dig with a shovel. I have had okra grow to 20 feet in one season so you get some idea of what gardening is like for me. Difficult as I have a large garden. Probably too large. I even have a marvelous squash that is a cross (made by a Hawaiian lady) between the local kabota and a cindarilla that has made squash at least 14 inches across and leaves the soil in wonderful condition. The flesh is dark red and creamy. It has small spines with formic acid that protect it from everything including me. I have to wear a hazmat suit to pick the squash. We were having a problem with large imported snails, but they are only shells now. I think the squash killed them. There is nothing like gardening in Papaikou, Hi on Hamakua coast near a stream where the land was never planted in sugar cane and is black. I keep experimenting to find out what grows best and how to control the weeds. This is a powerful tool. There are too many rocks to use mechanical means to garden. They are small, but I do all my garden work by hand and need the best tools made. This is one of them and as I said very unique. I am glad it is an American made tool. I like that it comes with a sheath and you can wear it on your belt.

A Decent Tool
I purchased this knife to use for invasive species work at the Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico. We are attempting to eradicate bull thistle plants in an area that will experience some fire prevention tree and brush removal. The plants are typically 2-3 feet tall with 1/2 inch stems and tap roots that can reach several inches in length. The soil we work in is mostly dry sandy loam with quite a bit of rock scattered throughout. The hori-hori tool is used by all of the national preserve vegetation survey crew at this site and was recommended to me. My search on Amazon produced several choices and I chose this knife because of its price and previous reviews. The knife has performed well over two days of digging up plants. The handle is very sturdy and relatively easy to hold. The blade is adequately thick and good at digging and cutting. The nylon sheath holds the knife comfortably and is easily held on my belt via a wide (2") loop built into the sheath. Contrary to the picture on Amazon, the knife is held in the sheath with a Velcro band that wraps around the handle. There is no snap. The Velcro feels somewhat flimsy and it will be interesting to see how long it lasts. All in all, I would purchase this knife again.

Better than Advertised
The pictures for this don't do it justice. They need to provide one of the obverse side of the blade. The blade is actually curved, like a spade. The text mentioned measurement markings to gauge soil depth, but the pictures did not show any such markings. That is because they are on the curved side of the blade.I was very impressed with the workmanship and quality of the product. My wife was skeptical when I told her what I had ordered for her. She currently uses an old butcher knife in her potting and garden work. When she saw this in person her eyes lit up. She is eager to use it for her gardening and potting.
