I must preface this review by saying I feel out of my depth discussing model car collecting-I know there is a whole culture out there and there is lots of expertise on precise details and particular cars which I simply don't have. As an ignorant layman, I would say although this set is technically suitable for 3+ children, its real market is with collectors or serious Hot Wheels track racers given the level of detail and price point. The set is part of a broader issue of historic Japanese cars all with the rubber tyres and the smooth movement for which Hot Wheels are famous. The level of detailing on the cars is impressive from the grills and bumpers to lights. Perhaps the graphics don't look so convincing close up, but the look of the model on the shelf is good and the castings seem decent. It is nice that the set includes both race cars and standard production marques. The set comes in a box which looks like a shipping container which you could use to display the cars although others will no doubt have grander cases.

This is the latest set of the Japan Historics from Hot Wheels and the five cars arrive in an appropriately sized pink cargo container as shown in the product listing’s images. The outer cardboard box has a couple clear security seals on the ends and is made to mimic the included shipping container with some extra information printed onto it. The rigid plastic container itself has some theme appropriate graffiti on the door that pops open and inside the five cars are held securely between some moulded plastic inserts. The door can be popped out entirely from the container and set aside if you want the cars inside to be visible and it can be stacked with the other sets that arrive in similar containers/display cases. The cars in this set are very nicely made and entirely live up to the reputation of the other Hot Wheels premium cars and other shipping container style releases they’ve done in the past. You’re getting the whole set for a little cheaper than buying them individually, though you are technically missing the chase car from the set, which is just a low-number production recolour of an already present car. It’s a black version of the Prince Skyline GT and the chances are high that it costs more than this entire set due to the scarcity. Obviously if you’re someone who’s more into collecting the unopened models this particular version of the set isn’t the best option as there isn’t really a proper sealed package like the individual models. I’ve got no real issue with them coming without their own individual blister packs and I appreciate that they’ve tried to go along with the theme with the container many of these cars would’ve been put into for importing. No complaints with this, if you or someone you know is into JDM cars or just premium Hot Wheels cars in general these would make a fantastic gift.

I know of some hotwheel car collectors that would absolutely love this collectors pack so if you have someone in your life (family or friends) that collect their toy die cast cars and love to display them then this 5 pack showing off some of the cultural Japanese historic cars that arrives in a pink coloured shipping container style display box is a good choice although I'm not sure why hotwheels decided to use pink. I would have preferred a navy blue, red or other colour so maybe Mattel could offer a change in colour display containers. None the less, colour aside the cars are fantastically detailed and looks gorgeous and unique compared to the usual hotwheels die cast cars that children play with. Don't get me wrong there's absolutely no reason why kids can't play with these but I'd assume for the price you'd probably want to buy these as a collectors set and for display purposes only. The manufacturing quality is just as good as the usual hotwheels cars but these are somewhat higher in detail and without doubt a collectors must have. The cars are the same in size to usual hotwheels cars and they can of course be played with, with free wheeling wheels. I'd say they're a bit pricey at £46.99 at time of review but the detailing and car styles are well worth it. Some of the cars I recognised instantly, others look similar to some of the British classics but be assured that these are all Japanese car manufacturers in the box. Honda, Toyota, Mazda etc If you are looking for a gift especially with Xmas around the corner or a birthday gift etc and you know someone who collects their cars, has an avid interest in older classics etc then you'd be making a good choice by buying these. I've seen them cost a lot more to buy individually and I've also seen them cost around £20 more elsewhere for the 5 pack shipping container set. This is a gorgeous looking set and a must have for collectors.
