Film 3 Drags Down Likability Factor of Bundle…
Of the three movies my favorite had to be The Santa Summit, and if it were the only film in the package I’d give it 5 stars. And that’s primarily because of the main character’s BFFs. They are played wonderfully by Amy Groening as the nerdy Ava who’s in love and anxious to finally find out if he feels the same. And the other friend is played with delightful sarcasm by Stephanie Sy. And boy let me tell you, she’s tiny as a pixie, but my god the pipes on her. That girl can sing. And while both of them have their own adventures and happiness by the end, I’ll admit that I really didn’t care about the main couple, especially the limited glimpse we get of her ex boyfriend… Face it, if he’s that much of a tool, what does that say about her? The first movie in the package is Catch Me If You Claus. And I think it was trying to pass itself off as a comedy… But there was just one problem. It wasn’t funny. The story was interesting, featuring 3-4 plot lines that bisected, paralleled and ran circles around each other, even leaving you wondering when, if or how they’d manage to meet by the end. But it still wasn’t funny… However, it’s because of the third film in the bundle that I punished the others with such a horrible rating. Though in fairness, the third film, Haul Out The Holly: Lit Up!, would have garnered a black hole rather than even a single star, because it was really that bad… Did I mention that it was bad? Which was odd, because you’da thunk it would have been better due to the “wattage” of the Hallmark queen, Lacey Chabert, being the star. Though it was often hard to tell, because Wes Brown was playing her supposed beau… Was he?!?!?.., I really couldn’t tell, because they seemed to have about as much chemistry as an acid and a base… Okay, maybe an antacid tablet and a base drum?… Or maybe an empty Pepto Bismal bottle and a base (as in from a baseball diamond) that just so happened to occupy one of the lowest levels in a metropolitan landfill… Though it’s hard to tell if they like each other, or if you even want them to get together by the end, because of the melting pot of who’s-who living in their culdesac(?)… Siri’s not sure if that’s the right spelling, but apparently she’s as despondent about the movie as I am… Especially when the new neighbors move in and turn out to be holiday royalty… Really!?!?!… Have we regressed as a culture to that point? I used to think that if I lived in Jerry Seinfeld’s building that Id’ve tossed them all out an upper story window. Well, even they would feel compelled to carjack a ‘73 Plymouth Fury III and drive it through every single house in that neighborhood… And after the horror (picture Colonel Kertz as portrayed by Marlon Brando) had subsided, it would take 3 bulldozers and a baker’s dozen of dump trucks to haul all the twisted, smashed and shredded Christmas lights, garland and holiday cheer off to the landfill… Clark Griswold would have felt sickened by the neighborhood excess… McAdenville, North Carolina would have turned their noses up at the gauche display. Okay, Lacey Chabert, Wes Brown and any number of retired character actors from the 1980s couldn’t save this film from the quicksand that the writers, producers and director plopped it down in. And I suspect that you won’t find a sign at the neighborhood entrance bragging about how they were featured in a Hallmark Christmas movie. If anything the property values have still not recovered. So there you have it. I tried to avoid revealing any plot details, and thankfully the third film didn’t have any to speak of. I really enjoyed the Santa Summit, and have watched it a number of times. And I especially liked the BFF characters played by Amy Groening (supposedly a niece of the Simpsons creator?) and Stephanie Sy, and I have made a habit of trying to watch other movies that feature them. And if this bundle is akin to Clark Griswold having to house Cousin Eddy from Christmas through Labor Day, then you can also find The Santa Summit on a 9-pack Hallmark bundle that has very few “stinkers” on the 3 discs. I should know, since I have it too among Hallmark’s Countdown To Christmas series of bundles.
