I have always been a fan of crispy chilis, and recently came across an article which claimed that Nigella Lawson really rated this brand. Well, who wouldn't take heed of what the goddess has to say about food? I am glad I listened to her. A jar full of crispy salty chili flakes and luscious oil. It is truly caked with crispy chili flakes - they come out in chunks on your spoon. The interesting thing about this is that it has a really nice, warm chili flavour but strangely not at all hot. Ok, I can take hot stuff but my husband and kids who aren't as used to hot food love this and can wolf down spoonfuls at a time. It is unlike another well known brand which is far hotter - however I would say that Lao Gan Ma's flavour is perhaps not as addictive as the other brand that also takes pride of place in my fridge. On the plus side, Lao Gan Ma's texture is more crunchy and crispy than other brands. They don't use olive oil. 2) Olive oil - especially extra virgin - has a strong taste and will change the flavour, especially the more you dilute it. 3) Olive oil cannot take high heat, or cold temperatures so it goes partially solid in the fridge and you can't fry with it or it will spoil the flavour. **Q: Is it suitable for vegetarians** A: I have just read the ingredients and they are all plant based!
