I start them burning on the four corners of my 10 x 12 deck right before going outside hoping they won't find me. Seems like not as many mosquitoes. Gnats love to live in the soil of the plants and reproduce. We use a couple other things to get rid of gnats but they still annoy us. So we light these sticks and they are fragrant, like incense but kind of a soapy smell. They are very thin, light easily and burn 30 - 45 minutes.
