Not fully standalone learning book
I have bought Troy Stetina books (many of them) and wanted to learn to play the guitar from beginning. The books looked by the content and text that it is a good idea. It wasn't. These books are excellent as supplement books learning material. On its own, if they are used as main, and the only source of information, they are lacking basics so much that it becomes a problem later. In my opinion, based on my own experience, it is best to use different book(s) by different authors to make sure to have different views and approaches, different learning materials to learn basics first and then go back to Troy's books and then they are excellent. Simply, for beginners as it says, yes, however not that this book will teach you that much that you will go out of being a beginner. Other books by the author won't do it either. They will become too advanced and you will still be missing the fundamentals. Again, my opinion only - maybe for other people it will work differently.

Rock Guitar Book
I purchased this to assist with my journey into rock god heaven, but soon realised my limitations as this book was in my opinion not for a newbie fret slayer (ideas above my station). There is plenty of good tunes to play but i soon realised it was too advanced for my limited playing ability might suit someone more advanced or someone who picks things up quicker.

Good starting point for lead guitar
Actually, this is a book for beginners. Exercises are written in TAB notation so it's easy to read. It covers basic techniques (hammer-on & pull-off, slide, bend, vibrato, staccato, palm muting, and more) with special emphasis on avoiding unwanted noise from other strings: playing clean. These techniques are also included in Metal Lead Guitar/Book and Cd (Vol. 1) but I'd better start with 'Metal Lead Guitar Primer'. It also introduces you into rhythm sense covering up to sixteenth notes, eighteenth & quarter note triplets, rests and rhythmic patterns. CD includes two songs to solo over (very nice). If you don't play clean when soloing with distortion or you're starting from the beginning as lead player, try this book, take a metronome and master the included techniques before going into Volume 1 & 2 (I highly recommend them) or other instructional book in lead guitar. If you really are an intermediate player, this book will be very basic.

The intro to Troy's Metal Lead series... a great beginner-intermediate guitarist resource!
I am utilizing this series and Metal Lead Guitar (MLG) Primer as I teach my nephew how to play guitar. This book follows the same kind of format as Troy's earlier books in the series, Metal Rhythm Guitar volume 1 is where you should start if you are an absolute beginner. I personally did not study this book like I did the others in this series (Metal Rhythm Guitar vol 1/2 and Metal Lead guitar volume 1 - i'm currently beginning Metal Lead volume 2.), the reason being is that I already had been playing guitar for a long time before I began this series. I knew I needed help honing my rhythm (which Metal Rhythm vol 1/2 sharpened and gave me a great sense of pulse) but my lead was already passed the fundamentals, so I began with Metal Lead volume 1 instead. If you are a beginning guitarist or have only been playing 1 or 2 years, definitely get Metal Lead Primer before volume 1! In any case, I am still using this book to teach my nephew who has been playing guitar for a year now. I know this series will sculpt him into an excellent musician/guitarist in a few more short years. If you are an aspiring metal guitarist or just like classic rock and roll and old 80s/90s rock/metal, Troy's resources are the absolute best out there and they have stood the test of time: these books came out in the late 80s and are heralded as the best of the best for good reason--they really work if you use them and they are a lot of fun to play--the solos and songs are inspired but they also really teach! Good luck on your journey, aspiring guitarist !

"Bueno como siempre"
Para introducirse en el metal, es estupendo. Como todo lo de este hombre. Bien explicado, fácil de entender. Lo único, que es en inglés.
