Great Affordable DAP
This is my third HiBy DAP. I gave my first one to my nephew when I decided I needed a larger screen. It's replacement found its way into my wife's possession! So, I purchased the R4 and could not be happier. It is a bit chunky but that is fine given its excellent battery life and large screen. I really appreciate the balanced input which works well with my Sennheiser Momentum headphones. The sound quality is top notch...at least to my older ears! I suspect that most people will not be able to hear a substantial difference between the R4 and more expensive DAPs unless using $400+ headphones. Another great feature is the Android interface. I can add any application from the Play Store to the unit. Currently I have music oriented applications installed along internet radio apps. Adding music to the R4 is as easy as copying files to a MicroSD card and inserting it into the slot on the side of the unit. Updates are also easy via WiFi. All in all, this is a great DAP and another fine product from HiBy.

Awesome DAP
I love everything about this thing. I have thousands of CD quality flac files on a 1tb SD card. I use the Poweramp software to play my music. The day it arrived I used wifi and got into the google play store so I could get the few apps I needed. I had to connect wifi for a couple more days after that because Poweramp requires special verifications on a new divice, but It has been 100% offline ever since. I logged out of my google account, and the wifi has never been turned back on. Over a year later and it is still functioning perfectly and sounds amazing. Worth every penny.

Great general purpose DAP/MP3 player
Excellent for working out. Great sound easy to use and intuitive once you spend some time understanding how. It helped that I set it up for the person I gave it to and then walked them through how to use it. Great sound and holds lots of tunes. Easy to just take your micro sd from one device and put in this one and then set up your songs the way you want. Great price for what you get and looks cool too. Battery life is pretty good and it looks very durable-no complaints from someone who uses it during workouts. Buttons make working it easy and the screen is big enough to make it easy to see and read while using. Pretty fast interface.

Good for the price, but not my final mp3 player
I have enjoyed using this, but I find myself wishing I had shelled out for a more expensive alternative upfront. This was my first mp3 player since my iPod Touch in 2008. My ultimate goal with this was to have a separate device for ebooks and music to escape doom-scrolling on my phone. This suits that need fairly well, with some minor annoyances. The battery life seems to get mixed reviews. In my experience, the battery lasts significantly longer when WiFi and Bluetooth are turned off. I generally get around 12 hours of use under these conditions. I really enjoy the auto-shutdown feature, which helps a lot with conserving battery. I hoped that this player would be able to handle playing flac files by Bluetooth without buffering, but the Bluetooth performance seems comparable to my smartphones. I don't know of this is a limitation of the player, my speakers, or Bluetooth transmission itself. Frankly, if you are buying something like this exclusively for Bluetooth, just get an Android phone. The OS is running an outdated, slightly modified version of Android. People complaining about the UI most likely have never used an Android device before. You can install other apps through the Play store, but compatibility may vary. I was glad that PowerAmp (my preferred music player) works fine. There is an Android Auto compatibility mode in the settings, but I have not been able to get it to pair with my 2026 Corolla. (Not that I would use it, because this can't run Google Maps.) I have had a few issues with the OS crashing and freezing. Fortunately I've been using Android long enough to know you can hard reboot by holding lock and volume down for ~30 seconds. I occasionally get issues with playback stuttering as well, but this may be attributable to the player app I'm using. The reboot resolves these issues, but it is somewhat annoying when this happens. This is small enough to be portable, but I tend to throw it in my bag rather than my pocket when it's not in use. It's a bit thick. Also, the buttons on the side seemed neat at first, but I am very thankful there is a switch to disable them. Having this in your pocket with the buttons unlocked is not a great move. They require very little pressure to activate. I've seen a few people complain about volume issues. If you experience this, turn up the gain in the settings. I have mine set to High a majority of the time. I am sure there are audiophile related reasons this is not ideal, but I am not cultured enough to notice or care. Overall, I think this is a good choice if you're just starting out with mp3 players and need expandable storage. I would like to eventually upgrade to a slightly higher-end model that doesn't crash irregularly. But with the crazy inflation of electronics prices lately, I will be fine using this for the foreseeable future.

Ongoing Software Issues, Device Became Unusable, Poor Customer Support
I’ve had the HiBy R4 since last year, and unfortunately my experience with it has been very disappointing. Only SEMI-USABLE for about 4 months with a lot of technical issues in between. From early on, I had repeated software issues. The device became laggy, would freeze, randomly restart, and at one point even locked me out by not accepting my password. I reached out to customer service twice, and both times I was told to factory reset the device and start over. That meant wiping everything from the player and setting it up again from scratch. After resetting it, the device would work for a short period of time, maybe about a month, and then the same problems would return. I ended up factory resetting it around four different times because I kept hoping the issue would finally be fixed. Eventually, the device stopped working almost completely. The screen no longer turns on to the password screen or the actual system. The only thing it shows is the battery charging symbol, so the screen itself still works, but the device will not display anything else. It is basically unusable now. When I reached out again, I was told I could not return it because the return window had passed. I understand return policies, but part of the reason I missed that window is because I was following their troubleshooting advice and repeatedly resetting the device, hoping it would work properly. They eventually told me I could send it overseas for inspection, but I would have to pay around $60 for shipping, which they would not cover. Overall, this has been a bad experience. The device had repeated software problems, became unusable, and the customer service did not provide a reasonable solution. I would not recommend this product based on my experience.

Hiby R4 - just Superb!
The sound quality is amazing. It quite literally when hooked up with my Hifiman planars sound better than my vintage audio with Focal speakers and subwoofer. Worth the money! They say this is the gateway device for DAPs, then I could only imagine the small incremental improvements.

A good DAP for the money
If you are new to DAPs, these require a learning curve. The main reason, imo, to have a DAP is for very good listening experience without being distracted by your phone. In other words, these are for folks who love to listen to music, sometimes called amateur audiophiles. I purchased the HiBy R6 III soon after it's launch and it is a good DAP but with multiple issues. The volume knob would stick and require significant pressure to turn. These are Android devices so if you're unfamiliar with Android it may take a little time to learn. You can download the browser of your choice. These devices have three different EQ interfaces that are very good yet also take time to learn how to use. HiBy has zero online explanation of these so you'll spend a lot of time playing with the system. NOTE, you can go do deep as to set EQ on individual tunes and it is then saved to the device. Perhaps some helpful info: 1. The R6 III has been in China for over a month supposedly being repaired. (The repair process was very difficult. Buy these at your own risk.) 2. I purchased the R4 in the meantime and it's as good as if not better than the R6 III with a few exceptions. (I have also purchased an additional R4 as gift.) 3. The R4 has side buttons for volume instead of a knob. Much better. 4. The R4 screen is not a bright but more than sufficient. 5. The HiByMusic interface is clunky and requires a lot of patience to use. 6. You will not get long battery life / use out of these devices no matter what they say. Even YouTube reviewers can be way off. I might get 6 hours in 1 day then it has the be recharged. So if you plan to use on travel, be sure you have a charger, cable... 7. When you use TIDAL, Qobuz, etc. music sources, it's quite a challenge to use these away from Wi-Fi access. In other words, the DAP won't play music you have downloaded to the device through a music source. I have a friend who uses Amazon music and his experience is excellent with downloading, art work, etc. (But AmazonHD is a lower res than other music sources.) 8. When you download your own music to the device (or I recommend a microSD card) you will have your music whether or not you have Wi-Fi access. 9. HiBy tech support is slow and inadequate. You are kind of on your own and may find help on YouTube or forum reviews. 10. The 4.4mm is the bomb. Using high end IEM's with a balanced cable is THE game changer. That is the primary reason, imo, for these HiBy DAPS that offer a true balanced 4.4mm connection.

If you are looking for a modern iPod that plays music at Hi Res quality, look no further.
GREAT product! Downloaded 200GB+ FLAC files and at least 50GB of Spotify music to 1TB microSD over Wifi using SyncThing and Spotify, drained battery by 45%. This is incredible. Took a nap while it finished downloading a couple dozen GB of FLAC files on the charger, was cool to the touch and fully charged when i woke up several hours later. Spotify CANNOT be used while downloading files to microSD card, nearly unusable, even on a high speed card. The music i listen to all the time (using bluetooth, Spotify, Very High) is noticeably enhanced. I have not tested with wired headphones yet, but I assume the enhancement would be even higher. Connects and works well with both my vehicles bluetooth systems (Microsoft Sync and Generic GMC). Today it was 96 degrees F and downloading both Spotify and SyncThing/FLAC at the same time produced noticeable heat, but not much more than my phone while browsing facebook. The system is blinding fast and reacts to button presses immediately. The bit perfect system is very apparent. Very easy to use. I really can't find a reason to complain about this device. Besides maybe not having a GPS chip so I could use it entirely instead of connecting my phone when i need to get directions. But that is not the point of this device. I like the color better with the TPU case on and the warmth of the device when syncing so much data, at the same time, in nearly 100 degree weather would have been a bit much to comfortably hold the device for a sustained period of time. Storage capacity is adequate for testing the device, but you will want to use a microSD card formatted in exFAT format (mine came preformatted). I got the green one, and instead of the neon green, with the TPU case on, it is more of a forest green. I was between this and the M300, and the battery life is worth not having an onboard speaker. Body is aluminum and glass, very high quality and durable build quality.

Well thought-out "pocket" DAB. Sounds amazing.
People are whinging about this thing as if they know what they are talking about. For the sound quality and features it has, The Hiby R4 is an absolute steal. Yes, I'm a music snob, but I live in the real world. It's the music that matters to me, and the kit enables that passion. Hiby are now an established brand and this is a feature-rich and great-sounding player. I have had a couple of the expensive DAPs and even through my decent hifi, I can't hear the difference between the HIBY and A&K. Allow it to "burn in" (like many audio machines, its components need to bed in - it may take 60 hours for some items to reach their best performance). Learn how to use it and don't forget to budget for a high-quality micro SD card - I have 17,000 lossless files on a 1.5TB card, for example - this may cost as much as the DAP itself. You will also need some decent headphones of some kind, to take advantage of the gorgeous sound and that will set you back £150+. I think that this price-point represents the sweet-spot in the balance between sound quality and price. With an expensive machine, I am worried about actually using it, and as most of these units are sealed, it's a nightmare to change the battery and it is likely to last you around 4 years anyway (look into iBasso if you want to change the battery yourself). This is my daily music player - it goes in the car with me, gets slung into bags and goes in my pocket (just about) when I am making a public appearance. The silicone cover is not pretty, but it serves its function well. *top tip* I would recommend getting a 10cm, right-angled extension cable to take the strain off the socket and headphone jack. You could use Bluetooth, but you will not get the full quality of the music and it adds to the battery drain. I have found IEMs (in-ear monitors) to be a very good solution. Use the larger, balanced headphone socket because they say the sound is better (yeah, right) and it's a slightly tougher connection. If you mess it up, you still have the standard 3.5mm jack. I am not going out looking like a muppet in my expensive over-ear headphones. HIBY and iBasso are both great brands with excellent sound. I don't see any reason to spend more than £300 on a DAP, unless you have a £10,000 hifi and an immense lossless music collection or you're a casual trying to show off. (Of course, I have such a machine linked to the hifi, lol, but I'm a commando not a casual). For £500, you can get a great player, a massive microSD card and some great headphones. This is how to do it, IM(not so)HO. Don't worry so much about the DAC or the processing - who cares? This technology is mature and there are a great many wonderful sounding machines out there. This is a good solid performer and I recommend it. You will have to spend £thousands on a player to get a noticeable improvement in sound quality - sue me - so dive in with this one. I only review products I think are great and nobody pays me.

Great
Excellent use and good screen display. It is on the high side on price but its also equipped with a good OS. I do like the chunkier side of the design, it doesn't identify as a smartphone. Delivers good sound and is clean regardless of what file you use. Also it comes with screen protectors which gives piece of mind to some. If you used to own an MP3 and want to listen to some songs or transfer them to this device this is the device to use. The HiBy R4 is a standout choice for anyone seeking audiophile-grade sound, futuristic design, and Android flexibility—all without breaking the bank. Whether you're upgrading from an older DAP or diving into high-res audio for the first time, this player delivers
