Julie Is Her Name / Lonely Girl / Calander Girl

Her earlier numbers
She always conceded that her vocal range was limited; but within that range she exhibited such fluid melody and haunting 'feel' with a gentle jazziness that more accomplished vocalists could only dream of having; Julie's the best.A brilliant CD.Barry

Sexy music on a stick
Julie London may not be Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan but she has a very appealing whispery voice that merges incredibly well with the best jazz guitarist that there is, Barney Kessel, playing simple, uncomplicated dinner jazz backing. This combined with the great track choices adds up to an absolute classic for those romantic moments or simply as dinner party mood music. Oftentimes, great jazz guitarists feel the need to display their virtuoso talent when performing as the leader on an album and in a combo get short solos or are drowned out by the horns and reeds. Here you not only get Julie's sexy delivery but also simpl, uncomlicated strummed chorde that set the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end.The current era offers nothing like this....the album sounds like all those glamorous US 50's images we get from technicolour movies of that age.I can't recommend this more highly.

You've got to remember Julie...
This new 2CD compilation comprises "Julie Is Her Name" (Liberty: LRP-3006/LST-7037) Bobby Troup and with Barney Kessel on guitar and Ray Leatherwood on bass, originally released in December 1955 and which reaches a Billboard peak: #2 (1/28/56); "Julie Is Her Name, Vol. 2" (Liberty: LRP-3100/LST-7100) Bobby Troup with Howard Roberts on guitar and Red Mitchell on bass. released: August 1, 1958 and "London By Night" (Liberty: LRP-3105/LST-7105) Bobby Troup with Pete King and His Orchestra, released: in 1958. All 3 albums were produced by Bobby Troup and have stood the test of time because of the vocal style and the accompaniments used. The first 2 albums presented here in their original running order are with a trio and allows Julie London to demonstrate her ability to phrase. The final album offers an orchestral backing from Pete King and it features two Troup originals: the opening track, "Well, Sir," and "Just the Way I Am". The sound is very good indeed and the running times are disc 1: approx 45 and disc 2: approx 44 minutes. The whole set is attractively packaged and has interesting liner notes by Neil Kellas. A must have set.

"Julie is Her Name"
"Julie is Her Name" is an excellent CD and I'm very pleased with it. Just one problem. The sleeve notes are stapled together in the wrong order. It makes it very difficult to read them.

Sleeve notes in the wrong order!
They start like this: "word. Hamilton refused to make the change and......". Oops! The sleeve notes spoil this release and that's a shame as the transfers are good. The music on the two albums is sensual, laid back and ethereal. Two lovely albums and some bonus tracks thrown in too that don't spoil the affair. Would have got 4 stars if the inlay had been given proper attention.

julie is her name
This is every bit as good as all her other recordings - her voice is soothing and sensual at the same time. I am only sorry she is not still with us so that we could see how she would deal with todays top songs in her genre.

Julie is her name create the bossa nova sound - the new way of playing cool jazz
This is the complete sessions of Julie is her name (1955), Julie is her name vol. II (1958), and excerpts (bonus tracks) from Lonely Girl (april, 1955), Julie (january, 1958) and Calendar Girl (may, 1956). Julie London is considered the most sensual voice in the history of jazz, besides Peggy Lee (Peggy was so surprising that Duke Ellington said once: "If I am the Duke, Peggy is the Queen"). Julie London alongside Peggy Lee, Anita O'Day, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Monica Zeterlund and Diana Krall, I must say, is a dazzling singer, mixturing seduction, softness, blasé posture and at same time strong, tender and furry voice. I'll start with the songs of Lonely Girl album. Well, it's is a cool jazz and the recordings reflects a most romantic atmosphere and intimacy, her voice very tender, melancholic and in love. The other is Julie, she plays with Jimmy Rowles and his Orchestra. The songs are cool jazz, only more impulsive, with sensuality and vibrating. "Calendar Girl" Julie played with Pete King and his Orchestra, also cool jazz, sung and played happier and loose. Now, I"ll introduce the album "Julie is her name". It's an album to remember and one of most important of jazz. In this particulary recordings are the new kind of cool jazz. Julie imposed a so called low singing way, very softly, almost a whisper and sexy voice, and in the words of the critic Bill Balance: "A performer who radiates charm and friendliness...", among the great guitarist Barney Kessel, whose style inaugurate the lightness and bright in how to play the guitar, he developed a style playing the guitar with solicitude, freshness, imposing a way to play very striking and remarkable conducting to a loneliness and the luminosity and singularity of the bass player Ray Leatherwood made history, because they create what will be called some years later of bossa nova. Yes people, you heard very well, bossa nova or cool jazz played and sung in the style of they did brand that kind of music. The way Julie and Barney achieved, playing with that feeling and slow, smooth and easy hand guitar, invented the bossa nova alongside the softness how Ray Leatherwood played the bass. If you add a drum with that peculiar accent, or better saying, latin beat (proceeding from Hispanic Harlem, Puerto Rico and Florida) make the final structure of bossa nova. The album begins with the classic standard "Cry me a river" (Diana Krall played a version in the "Look of Love" album) and many unforgetable and splendorous songs like "I should care", "I'm in the mood for love", "Laura", "Can't help lovin' that man", the romantic "I love you", " 'S Wonderful" (this is more a swing than cool jazz - Diana Krall played also a cool jazz - or if you prefer bossa nova- version in the album "Look of love"), "Gone with the wind" (the guitar riffs of Barney are impressive) and many others. Again, in the words of Bill Balance: "In this, her first album, Julie's molten mezzo is handsomely set off by Barney Kessel's guitar and Ray Leatherwood bass- a blending of three skills that adds up to an intimate, sleek and sultry production".The album Julie is her name vol. II also is a great record, Julie now is accompanied of Howard Roberts, a guitarist of great caliber, skills and very vigorous and a bass player with much balance, Red Mitchell. There are sublime interpretations of the classic romantic standard "Blue Moon", "Spring is here", "Too good to be true", "If I'm Lucky", "Hot today", "Little White lies" and many others stunning songs of cool jazz itself. To finish I must say, yes, people, the bossa nova is a product of United States of America in it's integrality, not from Bahia State, Brazil. João Gilberto took advantage and played bossa nova claiming it is his creation (sic). Nonsense, his album only appeared in 1958.
