If you want to use this thing with the straw, you might want to start with some other reviews. For, while my review will be comprehensive, I use it to hold and drink coffee without the straw, which is kind of the whole reason I bought it. You do NOT have to use the straw. There are two flip caps to keep it sealed with or without a straw. I use it like a mug. I don't even know where the straw is anymore. Alright, first up this thing looks A LOT like a Stanley mug because it is a lot like a Stanley mug. Same size and shape. Same metal inside, vacuum seal outside. I think the lid is different. I bring this up because if you are like me and you don't necessarily keep up on trends, you may have missed that Stanley mugs like this were super popular (and still are super popular). In fact, they were so popular that now it is popular to make fun of the, as befalls all trends that are big enough for long enough. I'm only saying this because after you get this mug that you think you discovered, you may be mocked by younger folk, particularly your children... if you care about that sort of thing. And, I oop. (Don't worry that's an even older thing where apparently we made fun of people--particularly girls--for having HydroFlasks.) Now, that you are hip and with it (don't start), I will review the actual Contigo 40oz, bring it on, mug. OK, to start, this thing is big. Probably too big if I'm being perfectly honest. At this size, you've sort of crossed the line between mug and thermos. On the other hand, this is a mug that holds about as much as a thermos, so... I've decided I like it, but I did have to get there. I bought this because it was bigger than what I had. (Turns out what I was using only held 16oz, so double it is only 32oz and maybe I overreached.) It was also the biggest I could find with a completely closable lid. Most of these type mugs come with that stupid "leak resistant" or "splash proof" lid which means it leaks unless you keep it upright at all times. I wanted one that sealed all the way up so I could put it in a backpack or set down on the seat next to me without worrying about it staying up. The reality is that while this mug does fully close, I would NOT trust it inside a backpack. I'd be a little bit worried about it laying on its side on something I really cared about. It's not that it leaks, its just that the TWO different closers could be popped open with enough lift/torque. One flip open cap is the main one that you would drink out of if you were drinking from it like a mug. There is a 2nd cap that covers the straw hole if you aren't using the straw. It's a one on the other kind of thing so you can open the straw cover by itself but opening the drink cover opens both of the lid together. It does not leak. This is important. It is a good sealing, no leak mug. The only weakness, if you want to call it that is that there is no way to latch down, or lock the covers. So while it does not leak the cap could get flipped up in the right circumstances. Insulation: I'm not really usually about 4 hours hot / 12 hours cold kind of measures because it doesn't take me that long to drink 40oz. That being said, I did fill it with coffee (hot), drive 40 minutes to a doctor appointment, and then go into the doctor appointment having not finished the hot coffee inside. When I came back to the car almost 60 minutes later, the coffee inside was still hot. Just a bit cooler than when I left it. If you're doing the math, I stayed good coffee drinking temperature for at least 100 minutes. It was in the 30s outside when I left it in the car, so it held up to some cold. A different time I left it on my desk in the office (normal inside temperature) and found it still drinkable four hours later, so I'm going to say that it keeps hot liquids hot for a minimum of 3 hours, and maybe more. If you're wondering, this holds about a half a pot of coffee. Oh, what's that? It doesn't say you can use it with hot? The other reviews say stuff about not using hot? Pshaw! The reason is that after a certain size, manufacturers don't like using certain kind of lids (the ones that seal) with hot beverages because the hot liquid inside that stays hot can end up building up some pressure, and if you open it some place not so hot, that pressure can cause the hot liquid to burst out of the mug. The reality is that if you fill this mug with hot liquid, and let the pressure build up, when you flip the cover open, it might spurt you with a little bit of hot spray. Of course, you can keep this from being an issue by pointing it away from your face when opening in, or by flipping the little straw hole cap open first. Either way, it probably won't be a big deal. I put hot coffee in this every day and it hasn't burned me yet. Another thing that is really cool about this mug. The inside is made of stainless steel. I have tons of stuff that is stainless steel and it always says something like it doesn't retain flavors or take on flavors or whtaever. I never really notice because I wash stuff after I use it, but in this case it's awesome. You can put coffee in this thing, leave if for hours, then just rinse it out and drink water out of it with no coffee taste! So cool. The one caveat is that the lid is plastic and you can't say the same for it. So, you'll have to put some effort into washing the lid, or just put up with a bit of coffee taste, or do what I do and leave the lid off when you are drinking water. Note, there is nothing wrong with the lid, it's the same as anything else plastic. Super double bonus points: I put it in the dishwasher. No hand wash only BS. Thing goes in and out of the dishwasher works just fine. Bottom line: If you find this and you want a usable mug that keeps your stuff at temperature this is a good one. I'd get it on sale for max value. Now, if you want the "real brand name one" that is would be a Stanley. They aren't as popular anymore, and they go on sale a lot too, so you can comparison shop.

Love this cup it keeps my drink cold. Love the color. I wish it had a carry handle I have to use a walker it would be to carry if another handle in it In the future consider adding a carry handle . I recommend this cup.

Great tumbler. Drinks stay cold for at least 6 or more hours. Keep by side of bed in case I need a sip of water at night. Have forgotten in car and hours later was still cold. Good product. Would purchase again.

I’ve been using this 40-oz tumbler daily for a few weeks and overall I’m really impressed with it. The size is perfect if you’re trying to drink more water. I don’t have to refill it nearly as often as smaller cups. Even though it’s large, it still fits in my car’s cup holder, which was a big plus for me. The insulation works great. Ice lasts most of the day and my drinks stay cold for hours, even when the tumbler sits out on a warm day. The handle is comfortable and makes it easy to carry around whether I’m heading out the door, driving, or working outside. The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is the lid. The cup itself feels sturdy and well made, but the lid cracked sooner than I expected with normal use. It still functions, but it seems like the one part that could be improved. Aside from that, I really like this tumbler and use it every day. If the lid were a little more durable, it would easily be a five-star product. These cups are great we have a quite a few of them, they don't fade keeping them looking new. They keep drinks cold even in a hot vehicle in triple digits, as I use mine for a blended protein shake and have come back out to it still ice cold. It also will hold larger thicker straws as well.

I've been on a quest since I entered my 30s to stay hydrated. It's a struggle. Thus entered big water bottles. I've carried water bottles and tea cups to work with me for years. And until very recently I kept them all to 24 oz and smaller. I bought some 40 oz Contigo water bottles a few years ago and it is now a daily goal to drink one of them along with a 24 oz unsweetened iced tea a day. I've struggled. The water gets warm too quickly in my hot office, they don't fit in my car cup holder, they're a bit unwieldy. I had looked at this style from Contigo for awhile and finally just ordered this one. I love it. I finish all my water so quickly because I can put it in the fridge at 9 am, pull it out at around 1 pm and have cold water well into the evening. I also drink my water faster with the straw. I literally have finished almost a quarter of my water in the last half hour. It's crazy. I now have two, and I bought them both from Amazon Resale and I'm super happy. They price I was able to get them for from there really made them all the better. I will say they are a great deal at retail price as well, but you know save your money where you can. They seem pretty dang sturdy. I'm not super concerned with the handle coming off or anything. I'm careful of dropping them because I don't want to dent them or scratch the paint just yet. What I like about Contigo, versus other big name brands for bottles and cups, is that I they seem to have someone in their development team that actually washes stuff. Every cup I've ever bought from them had features that made them easier to clean. Like it's a win. Now aesthetically, the green is a lot. I don't care how bright it looks on the computer screen it's brighter in person. So if you're looking to relive the height of millennial mint, then Reef is the perfect color. I also bought a second one in Inkycap and I much prefer that color. It is more brown in person less grey, but its that perfect mushroomy color. Also, it fits in my cup holder. Well, it fits better than most of my other large cups do and it's pretty easy to carry. I do find myself holding it by the narrow bottom more than the handle, but that works for me cause I have big hands. Whenever I carry it by the handle I always feel like I'm swinging around a weapon. It's really heavy and fits well in the hand. I've smacked the cup while holding the handle and as long as there is water in it there is little or no transference of the energy from a strike to the hand holding the handle. Something to think about if you ever are carrying it out to your car late at night by yourself.

The good: Yes it really is leak proof if you use the included straw. I like to keep water on my bedside at night because I get thirsty and I've drenched myself a few times in the past and it's nice to have a tumbler that is leak proof that I can sip from and I don't have to worry about taking a bath in bed. With that said, you have to use the straw that came with it. I had some metal straws but they were too small in circumference to seal properly in the cap so I couldn't use them. The stainless steel interior is high quality and the insulation seems adequate. The bad: I wanted to be able to throw hot coffee in this if I had to hit the road but can I? You tell me. Read the description carefully. It specifically says it's ready for hot or cold beverages but when I receive the tumbler in the mail attached to the tumbler was a cardboard piece stating that it's for use of cold beverages only. So who knows right. I've got a call in to the manufacturer but they have not returned my message. It really is false advertising. You can't say something is suitable for hot beverages. Sell it to them and then when they get it it says it's for use of cold beverages only.

This is the ONLY tumbler with a screw on lid that doesn’t leak while giving you the option for a straw. I’ve used it for hot beverages it lasts 4-5 hours, used it to brew tea using a little tea infuser that fits in perfectly. Great for Yerba Mate, Guayusa tea, coffee and of course water. Keeps it cold for longer than I need. Easy to clean. Enough capacity to last a day. I throw it in my backpack without any worry of leaks. Plain and simple, this is the ULTIMATE tumbler. The capability here can’t be replicated by any other brand, therefore I stand by Contigo and their products. My 3rd Contigo product. Affordable, reliable and aesthetically pleasing.

I bought this water bottle for my wife and she absuloutly loved it. The colour that we chose looks very nice and bold, but it does look a little bit different from the picture so that's why I attached my own image. Even though this mug is very big, it fits in cup holders very easily which is beneficial for traveling. Due to its 40oz volume, it holds lots of water and it makes sure you drink enough water without refilling it to many times. You can also buy accessories for this tumbler like a divider that can go inside so you can fit two different drinks inside, or covers for the bottom to prevent getting scratched. This tumbler keeps your drinks hot or cold for large amounts of time due to its vacume insulation. This cup also has very minimal leaks which is very handy as well. Of course water will spill through the straw, which is why there is a lid that goes over top of the hole that the straw goes into. However it would be handy if there was a straw holder at the side of the cup to prevent the straw from getting lost or dirty while not in the cup. If you do not want to drink with the straw, there is another lid that you can uncover to drink without the straw. In addition Contigo is overall a very good brand with great prices and is definitely underrated.
