Can this cut a padlock?

A padlock would be pushing it. The opening of the jaws is definitely too small to fit around a padlock. They definitely do a good job cutting cable wire. I’ve tried several other cable wire cutters and nine compared to this particular item for the price you can’t beat it .

Can this cut through 8 gauge steel wire used for springs on a couch?

Probably not, springs are tempered steel. The pliers are tempered steel.

Will these work for 12 gauge copper, brass, and sterling silver wires?

These are intended for 5/32" steel wire rope which is twice as thick and much more difficult to cut than any 12 gauge wire. with that in mind, I would be certain they can cut 12 gauge copper, brass, and sterling silver wires.
