The thicker diameter and extra length of the ferro rod make it easier to grip and maneuver when your hands are cold and stiff. I use this rod with some #0000 steel wool to catch the sparks, and have had no issues. Would absolutely recommend!

REALLY hard rods, so, make sure your striker is up to the challenge. I used an old triangular file, made from good steel, and I get great sparks. These ferro-rods are great. They give the ability to start a fire when needed, even in wet, windy and high altitude conditions. I tested them myself, and they definitely throw off a lot of sparks. They are quite large compared to other rods, which is a good thing. If using a knife as a striker, just be sure to use the spine, not the blade.
