Perfect for my deba
This is exactly what I needed. I got a high carbon deba knife, which I adore. Of course, it has a thicker spine than a traditional American chef knife. I didn't think this through, so of course it wouldn't fit in my butcher block counter top knife organizer. Nor would it fit in ANY knife organizer I could find online, which are all made for American or European knives rather than Japanese. I was worried my savagely sharp knife (finally a knife that cuts well without struggling!) would perish in a drawer clunking against spoons and tongs. I was so thrilled to find this cover. It fits exactly. If you are buying it for a knife made by a different company, then do your homework and measure your knife to compare to the dimensions. I also like that the cover is unfinished. I do not like petroleum based mineral oils, which coat a lot of kitchen wooden products. This is entirely unfinished, so I can use organic beeswax if I like, or nothing at all. My one regret is that I somehow lost the screw which tightens to keep the knife secure immediately upon receiving the cover. That's my error, however, and no fault of the manufacturer.

Good material and surface finish but Sizing is Ridiculous.
I ordered this saya for my 170mm Deba, and what I received was 240mm long—far too large for my knife. It felt more like a wooden kayak than a knife cover. While the craftsmanship is excellent, the sizing is completely misleading. Additionally, the saya itself is extremely bulky and thick, lacking the finesse of the types of knifes it’s supposed to protect. I contacted Yoshihiro’s support team to clarify the issue, but the response was disappointing. They dismissed my concerns with boilerplate text, insisting the size was correct without even acknowledging the photo. If you’re looking for a precise fit or a sleek design, I cannot recommend this product. I’ve attached a photo to show the significant size discrepancy.

Bulky and awkward
This saya was ridiculously wide and thick for the petty knife that it was supposed to cover. I know that it’s supposed to be a “one size fits all” kind of thing (“this saya will fit almost any knife that is X mm long and X mm wide”) but the shape of this saya is SO different from my knife that it should be considered a different style altogether. Sell a 4.5” saya and then, separately, sell this extra-wide 4.5” saya (sorry if the length I’m giving isn’t accurate but you get the point). This thing seems to be built for shrunken Takeda gyutos. It’s thick, as well. It creates a bump in my knife bag. Sayas should be much thinner and they usually are.

Works
Does what its supposed to. I like the plastic pin that secures the knife in place.
