It does require to be paired to a phone via bluetooth, for the initial setup and data. Data being that active steps, distance, heart rate, sleep tracker etc. Its really an activity watch with built in games. Its really was a surprise to me that it had a heart rate sensor built in. The games are decent and will keep them entertained for a bit, but it is very basic. There are different watch faces that can be picked out and some other fun functions for the young ones. like a timer for example. Battery life is also good and can last a couple days. It does come with a proprietary charging cable, so make sure its not lost.
