Beyond Soap: The Real Truth About What You Are Doing to Your Skin and How to Fix It for a Beautiful, Healthy Glow

Amazing how simple it all can be.
Skin care, just like fitness, is a stellar example of just how insane we have become thanks to marketing and the unholy need to overcomplicate because we can't look the truth and ourselves in the eye. Dr. Skotnicki is a shining light in a moderately corrupt field (not as bad as the fitness industry anyway). Best realization for me was the simple truth that, before we created this skin care chemical romance, our ancestors (1-2 gen's ago, not cavemen) had little to no skin issues doing absolutely nothing but washing with water. Now it seems the more developed your nation is, the greater chance your society deals with a slew of skin issues. Why do you think that is? Could it be all the corporate products with chemicals sold under very shady approval pretexts where profit is the most important thing? Too easy? Too conspiratorial? Of course the fix for all this is just as simple as the fix for obesity. For obesity it's literally stop eating so many calories. What kind of calories? Doesn't at all matter. No matter who blows smoke in your YouTube feed. For your skin? Stop using their promised wonder products. Stop cleaning your skin 8 times a day with harsh cleansers so you have to buy moisturizer's and corrective serums to replace the moisture and appearance you continue to scrub off. It only creates a society of corporate necessity. It also adds to irritation and even further skin maladies. I have had skin issues my whole 43 years on this planet. From diaper rash to adult acne. I was treading very close to giving up on everything. I suspected that if I applied my knowledge of nutrition to my skin problems I might be able to fix it for good. This book helped to solidify what I was starting to understand. Sandy, you're an angel, and your book is changing my life.

A great book with lots of good information, but a little repetitive.
The book is very interesting and insightful, and I am grateful for the opportunity to read more about my skin and how to take care of it. I agree with a lot of the points the author makes about how we "over wash" our skin and how unsuspected transfer can create allergic reactions that we may not be aware of. I have a friend who has been suffering from itchy skin for months now and has many of the exact symptoms that this book describes and so this book will be very useful for her.The author gives you step by step instructions for a new skin care regimen, she outlines the same plan she gives to her clients, and she names the exact products you should buy. The doctor is Canadian, and when I tried to find some of the sunblock brands at a major store I was not able to find any of them. The book also has a variety of personal vignettes that were interesting. On the other hand, the book is EXTREMELY repetitive. It made me wonder how many readers aren't paying attention and so they have to make every point three times. At times, this made the book arduous to read. The page count could probably be cut back by 1/3. If you see it come up on Blinkist read it there (Blinkist is the modern version of readers digest condensed books).I learned some great information, and we all have itchy skin from time to time. This book is definitely a better resource than a bottle of lotion.

Good book
Good book. Makes an interesting case against over-washing skin that we could all use (although one doesn't want to get seborrheic dermatitis from too little washing). If you have a child I'd buy it and then look up the current washing recommendations for kids (1-2 times a week) because she makes a powerful case that too much bathing has been causing kids to get bad skin conditions you see so commonly. Nice balance of referring to the fact that there are studies supporting her views for how to treat skin without making the audience slog through them, then offers actual product recommendations. It's a window into a top dermatologist's views on skin care and product recommendations so it's like getting a lot of concrete advice from a doctor you respect. As a PhD I respect a great MD in a totally different field when you can see they know their material and communicate clearly.

A must have for those battling with skin sensitivities
I haven't even finished reading it, but it is SO informative. I am especially passionate about it, because it talks about product labeling laws & how misleading they are. I have a daughter with food allergies so this is already lax in the food world, but even MORE so in the beauty product world! People look at me like I am crazy when I say soaps, fragrances, etc, can have my daughters allergen...but its true. So much of the population just uses what is on the market without thinking what chemicals, plants, & ingredients could be irritating their bodies/skin. This book explains why it is important to pay attention. It is a GEM!

Dr gives advice to care for skin for every stage of life
Well written and interesting book about how to treat your skin. I applaud the Dr for making a book about washing your skin this interesting! I had heard from my dermatologist years ago that it's ok to just "wash the bits" and I personally have been trying to back away from the multi ingredient bath scrubs, oils, soaps etc and get back to more basic products. I found the chapters about natural ingredients very interesting. I thought it interesting that if you wash your hands so many times a day, like many women do while involved with child care and cooking, she recommended using a hand sanitizer and not washing all the time. As a senior, my skin is dryer than it was before and I use an olive oil base moisturizer, and I intend to keep doing so. Some of the soaps recommended include Cetaphil ( dermatologists love this soap!) , Neutrogena and Aveeno all of which are readily found. Really interesting is caring for skin at different stages of life. Now, I think it's great advice and I'll probably follow it as much as I can but still want to shampoo every day!

Everyone should read it!
The only dermatologist (and I've come across quite a few) that actually cares about their patients and not just about keeping them coming back to get her more business. I learnt so much useful information. My skin issues are pretty much gone, and I am spending so much less $$$ on skincare now!

Brilliant book, must read for anyone with skin
I devoured this book and dealing with ACD (Allergic Contact Dermatitis) constantly refer back to it. It's everything your Dermatologist probably wants to tell you but there just isn't time in appointments. A useful starting point too for parents with new babies, well researched, expert advice I wish I had had. I recommend and actually do so to many people. In my opinion essential reading, following Dr Sandys advice could really help mitigate allergies which can develop at anytime. Definitely recommend reading it and implementing every bit you can.

Me encanto

Excellent book!
I was so glad to find this book, though I waited quite a while for the price to come down for the ebook, which I prefer. I've had skin issues for a while and many questions were answered. I am especially grateful for the product recommendations and the info about what to avoid in products. I did find, though, that the promised website which would give updates on products and change of names of products isn't available. I wish that had been kept up because one product might not be the one she recommends as one word is missing from the name and the company's website doesn't list the exact name she gave so I'm not sure but will try it anyway. I also like the range of products for each category as they are not all super pricey. Even just her showering technique has helped my skin. Thanks so much for this. I have a couple of questions but no place to ask them (I thought the website would be it, but, no). Other than a trip to Toronto and an appointment, I guess I'll have to wait and see if there's a sequel.

A little too much filler content before getting to the meat of the subject
I didn't really need exhaustive discussion on the cosmetic industry. What I really wanted was a concise list of that I could take into the drug store. Instead, I had to suffer and scratch and read through a lot before getting to the recommended products. That would be a good appendix resource for future editions.
