Product description CD: Luther Vandross,Busy Body Review The apex of Luther Vandross’ collaboration with producer and bassist Marcus Miller, Vandross’ third album Busy Body positively leaps out of the speakers with the synthetic stabs of opener I Wanted Your Love. One of his best dancefloor numbers, it is probably the only example in Vandross’ solo catalogue of him sounding at the cutting edge, with its New York club swagger.I Wanted Your Love was one of the first Vandross singles to receive a proper contemporaneous release in the UK, and it trailed an album that caught him on the cusp of superstardom.Busy Body contained three superb, snappy, astute up-tempo observations on love; aside from I Wanted Your Love, I’ll Let You Slide and For the Sweetness of Your Love all continued this choppy, urban groove. But for many, Busy Body was all about the four remaining ballads. The title track continues the lyrical obsession that courses through all of Vandross’ work about lost or unrequited romance.Although the duet with Dionne Warwick, How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye, verges on the formulaic, his version of Superstar, featuring sections of Aretha Franklin’s take on Until You Come Back to Me, is one of his greatest moments.Although Cher, Bette Midler and The Carpenters had all covered Superstar with great success, Vandross sings it as if he is on the verge of breaking into tears – it is one of the most soulful performances he ever delivered. His biographer Craig Seymour noted that he turned the song of a groupie longing for her idol into “a near universal plea, applicable to anyone who has ever been wilfully abandoned or carelessly left behind”.No mainstream soul performer captured longing and regret as well as Vandross. Wrapped in their lush productions, many missed the pathos at the heart of his work.Although not as accomplished as its successor, The Night I Fell In Love, Busy Body was one of only four albums that sold over a million by African-American artists in the US in 1983 – Prince, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie released the others – and it demonstrates more than ever how Vandross deserved his place among those megastars. --Daryl Easlea Find more music at the BBC This link will take you off in a new window

"loneliness is such a sad affair ..."
This is a line from the monster final track on this album, which goes on for a glorious nine minutes, and finds Luther Vandross at his very best - a slow tempo, expansive musings blending two songs together, Until You Come Back To Me and Superstar. The latter dominates, a song that Bette Midler also sang in the early days, but Luther gets the real poignancy better and sounds less sentimental. The great virtue of his voice is perhaps to elevate material that can sound a bit cheap, by virtue, most probably, of a belief in the songs and also a distinctive voice that in itself has a certain emotional reserve. Several of the tracks are successful mid-tempo numbers, including a brilliant duet with Dionne Warwick, How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye. Busy Body and I'll Let You Slide are both effective, and have slightly different takes on infidelity, one gently moralising and the other turning a blind eye (inasmuch as the words actually make sense, but there is the feeling of infidelity which is clearly spelt out in the first verse, where she is watching TV with another guy. Later developments seem to contradict this ... perhaps it's his hopes?). The dance tracks have a lot of verve in the Marcus Miller style - his hand in the production gives a very 80s sound that has a real 'get up and dance' feel, if only they were played in places where you could. Perhaps not the absolute zenith of disco, but pretty good even so ...

Luther Vandross Brilliant Music
Parcel arrived very quickly before the expected delivery date, was very pleased. The only slight problem was that the packaging was already opened but cello taped. Luckily the CD's sealed wrapping was not opened; so I decided to keep it. Music sounds crystal clear. I've always enjoyed Luther Vandross music, he could sing anything and it would always sound brilliant. Enjoyed every single track on the CD. A brilliant purchase interested in buying his other music.

Only 7 songs, but I think still one of Luther Vandross's better Albums.

Get it play it and dance
Another gem. There's a real groove running through this LP and if you can get Aretha's Get it Right cd as a companion from the same year you will complete the picture of what a great composer and arranger he was.

Superstar / Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)
私が以前、購入した2枚組CD「The Essential Luther Vandross」には、「Superstar」のショートバージョンが収録されていて、ロングバージョンメドレーの「Superstar / Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)」が聴きたくて、こちらを購入しました!これは、Lutherの一番の名曲だと思う♪

+1/2; Good, if dated, effort
Another good recording that shares many of the same strengths as the pervious two records, with only a few drawbacks. The main drawback to this album is all the cheesy synth lines that really date the disc as a product of the early eighties. The record opens with synth-heavy dance tracks the "I Wanted Your Love," the title track, and "I Let You Slide," and all are pleasant but disposable. This actually makes the optimistic sentiment of the disc's next two tracks (the lovely "Make Me A Believer" and the irresistible mid-tempo "For The Sweetness Of Your Love") even more effective. Luther also gets the chance to perform with his childhood idol Dionne Warwick on the teary duet "How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye," which managed to crack the Top 30 on Billboard's Hot 100 as a single. However, the real event of the disc is the closing track. Luther combines Leon Russell's "Superstar" with elements from Stevie Wonder's "Until You Come Back To Me," and the result is a shattering masterpiece. At more than 9 minutes long, the "Superstar/Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" medley is a virtual epic that lives on as one of Luther's finest achievements. It rivals only "A House Is Not A Home A Home," as his finest cover. Even though BUSY BODY as a whole is as good as Luther's first two records, it's still worth picking up. It actually failed to reach Top 20 on the Hot 200, peaking at a still perfectly respectable #32. Luther's fans, however, were still as dedicated as ever, and BUSY BODY did eventually reach Platinum-status in sales.
