Lookin' For Boys! (Girl Pop & Girl Group Gems In Stereo 1962-1967)

This CD release from Teensville Records (out of Australia) is filled with rare or new stereo. You get 29 out of 32 tracks in stereo and they sound really good. The disc is packaged in a standard jewel case and comes with informative liner notes that include label scans of many of the 45s plus pictures of the artists. There is a note that vinyl was used as a source on some of these rare tracks. Regardless this is still a wonderful addition to your collection if you enjoy the girl group sounds of the 60s. It's filled to the maximum with terrific 60s pop girl sounds and it's priced right. Highly recommended.

Lots of girl group collections out there, so I don't expect much from still more coming along, but this is a winner!! Really good collection and excellent sound! Some standouts. So many singles being released every week back then, only a few could get airplay and hit. Wish some of these girls and groups could have had more luck. They certainly deserved it.

I'm afraid I can't give this a very strong recommendation. Not that it's not well done, with liner notes. It's just unless your into REALLY Obscure Girl Group songs from 1962-67, it's really for collectors looking for very rare and obscure tracks. There are NO Billboard Charting Hits here except Marcie Blane "What Does A Girl Do?" Which charted at Billboard at Top Pop # 82. The real treasures are two tracks Lesley Gore "It's My Party" (Alternate Vocal) (Billboard #1) which isn't that distinguishable from the original version or the one track that most attracted me was the very last track "Tell Him" (Billboard # 4) by the Exciters (Alternate Version) which is notably different from the original charting hit. There are two tracks by Anita Bryant & Donna Lynn that had Billboard Chart hits (Bryant had 11 & Lynn only had 1) but None of these are here. The rest of the Girl artists & groups had NO charting Billboard Hits. As I've said all the rest are very obscure.

Not as many catchy songs as the 'Girls on 45' series from Teensville. Some songs are plodding, some meander, some are just dull. The sound quality is excellent, crisp and full.

What a wonderful cd. 29 songs in first time stereo and 3 mono cuts. Clean Clear great stereo. Obviously put together by music lovers.

It was a very satisfying experience. I had one of the best times of my life. I used it for pure pleasure to have a good time.

In the booklet, the makers of this compilation say "Special Thanks to Bob Feldman For Use of Multitrack Master Tapes", which were remixed for this release. Feldman was part of the Feldman-Goldstein-Gottehrer team of songwriters and producers, who also had smash hits as The Strangeloves.It is indeed interesting to hear Yvonne Carroll's "Mister Loverman', for example, in stereo with unprecedented clarity. You can also study Lesley Gore's ''It's My Party" voice as clear as never before in an alternate version without any vocal overdubs. In addition, this comp offers some never-heard-before songs from the vaults. The informative booklet with a few very nice photos is worth great praise as well.Personally, I have mixed feelings, though. Whilst the clarity and the stereo are very welcome indeed, I somehow miss the typical girl-group punch and grit of the original mono records.Highly recommended, a must-have for sure for fans of the genre, but tastes and opinions might differ.

Over recent years Teensville have come up with some sensational cds. This is one of those, mainly not so well know singers , but there are a few who you may know, if like me, music of the Sixties is your main interest. Let’s have some more like this soon.

Das australische Teensville-Label packt aktuell gleich 32 Songs auf einen Silberling, titelt: Lookin‘ For Boys. Untertitel: Girl Pop & Girl Group Gems in Stereo 1962– 1967.Das Spektrum hat sich schon seit einigen Jahren vergrößert. Es geht mittlerweile nicht nur um dem den klassischen Girl-Group-Sound, mit dem man Bands wie die Shirelles, die Angels, die Crystals, die Cookies, die Dixie Cups, die Shangri-Las verbindet, und auch nicht um Girl Groups aus der zweiten, dritten oder achtundzwanzigsten Reihe, sondern um einen umfassenderen Ansatz (der Strom soll ja strömen). Der gemeinsame Nenner ist das Weibliche. Es werden Aufnahmen aus Folk und Pop und Rock kompiliert, die Grenzen zwischen Northern Soul und Girl-Group-Sound sind eh fließend. Die meisten der insgesamt 32 (sic!) Songs sind neu gemixt, in Stereo, glänzen & funkeln in neuem Soundgewand. So wie ich das verstehe, sind sie aus dem Archiv von Bob Feldman, laut Eigenaussage der „Träumer“ aus dem legendären Produzenten- und Songschreiber-Trio Bob Feldman, Richard Gottehrer und Jerry Goldstein, kurz FGG. Diese Drei waren u. a. verantwortlich für den unsterblichen Klassiker „My Boyfriend’s Back“ der Angels (und für „Hang On Sloopy“ der McCoys) und nahmen als „The Strangeloves“ selbst Songs auf („I Want Candy“). Drei noch nirgendwo jemals veröffentlichte Archivfunde finden sich ebenfalls auf dieser CD.Es überwiegt das Rare und Obskure. Zwei Klassiker („It’s My Party“ von Lesley Gore und „Tell Him“ von den Exciters) runden in „alternate Versions“ das Paket ab. Die Dixie Cups sind mit einem Nebenroutensong vertreten, es gibt einen furchtbaren Song von Debra Swisher, vormals bei den Pixies Three. Marcie Blane ist bekannt bei den Experten, Diane Christian kennt man von diversen Zusammenstellungen.Das erste Viertel der CD ist dermaßen gut, dass es einem schwindlig wird vor lauter Begeisterung. „Lookin‘ For Boys“ aus dem Hause FGG von den ominösen One-Single-Only The Pin-Ups ist natürlich ein eigentlich unverschämtes Recycling des Nummer-Eins-Hits „My Boyfriend’s Back“ aus demselben Hause, aber es hat dazu einen inhaltlichen und musikalischen Beach-Boys-Einschlag, der das Stück absolut unwiderstehlich macht. „All I Want To Do Is Run“ von den Elektras (1963), mit Diane Christian als Leadsingerin, beginnt fingerschnippend poppig, bevor es dann unfassbar an Tempo aufnimmt … Diane Christians Stimme schwirrt in unerhörten Sphären, Tears in my eyes, Bläser sorgen für eine gewisse Erdenhaftung. Unglaublicher Song. Danach gleich die 1965er-Single „Mr. Loveman“ von Yvonne Carroll, die sich auch auf der legendären Hutschachtel-Box „One Kiss Can Lead To Another“ von Rhino findet. Qualitätsbeweis genug. Der siebte Song, ausnahmsweise in Mono, heißt „Ding Dong“, dargeboten von den Penny Sisters, und ist ein zweieinhalbminütiger Wedding-Bells-Song von entwaffnendem Charme, pur und rein, flirrender Wohlklang & Unschuld (und doch möchte man ihn auf einem Mixtape vor „Ding Dang“ der Beach Boys platzieren). Im Anschluss „Girls Don’t Trust That Boy“ von Patty Lace & The Petticoats (einmal mehr mit der enorm wandlungsfähigen Diane Christan als Leadsängerin) beginnt mit einem sehr coolen Spoken-Word-Intro: He’s got a bad reputation!Es wäre ein Wunder, wären alle 32 Songs auf diesem Level. Sind sie nicht, zumindest für mich. Trotzdem fünf Sterne, da diese CD einmal mehr verdeutlicht, was für kreative, leidenschaftliche, vielschichtige Musik in den Sixties produziert wurde. Ist es Weltflucht, wenn man diese Songs noch heute schätzt? Kapitulation, Verweiflung, Naivität? Trotz? Oder bloß Nostalgie? I just wasn’t made for these times, sang Brian Wilson auf seiner besten Platte.
