It is an easy read and geared for a do it yourself hunter
This book is a must have if you hunt out West. I live in AZ and hunt Coues deer and desert Mulies. I hunt AZ and NM. This book helps you understand how to prepare for your hunt. It teaches you deer behavior, spotting techniques, and where to find deer. I used to burn shoe leather. After reading this book I have filled my tags ever since. It is an easy read and geared for a do it yourself hunter. The author is a bow hunter. I mostly rifle hunt and it definitely made me a better hunter and more patient. You could probably use these techniques not only on deer but elk antelope beer etc. I’ve recommended this book to a few my friends and they found it just as helpful. Again if you’re not from the west and planning a hunt Outwest definitely buy this book and read it and it’ll get you prepared for your hunt

this was by far the best. Even though it is older
Having bought most of the popular mule deer books for this season, this was by far the best. Even though it is older, the content is much more geared towards actual tactics and deer habitat and behaviors. Whereas others are focused more on scoring and google earth scouting, this is more focused on techniques for on the ground scouting and hunting. It is also nice that while highlighting his techniques, the author then discusses successful hunters who have used alternative tactics to his own.

A guide for the ages.
Darn right it's worth it!I dont know if you realized this but In southern California there's a drought. I'm 23 years old and have been using the more miles means more deer method for three fruitless (rifle) seasons in D13 and D11. That was before I read this book. It's hard to describe the calming yet adrenaline filled way that this book is written. But after reading this book I modified my approach to hunting and focused on my ability to scout. Patience and detail at long range. With better optics I went out this past weekend to a Valley in the foothills, that honestly I thought would be absolutely empty before Dwight schuh. I spend the night on the ridge and before first light was in position. Within an 30 minutes I spotted a deer, then another and another! 6 deer in all within 3 hours!Thank you Dwight for your years of insight and I hope to see a modern update someday!(this book is a bit dated being written in 1985, the animals are still the same, but I'm sure Dwight could expand with some 21st century tips)This is the last book you'll need for mule deer. Buy only this book and Save your money for am better spotting scope/binoculars

I can no longer hunt these wonderful animals due to health issues as I once did ...
I can no longer hunt these wonderful animals due to health issues as I once did in Wyoming. I bought a copy of this way back and did not notice I had not write a review until today. There is so little on the subject of open country Mule Deer Dwight's book is a must read! I once hunted them from above timberline to the deserts in Wyoming and there is nothing more fun to do except maybe Elk when they sing above Jackson Hole east in the true rugged back country!

A Treasure
Really glad I picked up this book. Dwight Schuh systematically presents a timeless method for successful mule deer hunting. Some of the technical information is outdated, but the principles which guided those technical choices are still valid. I loved Dwight's conversational writing tone and the constant stream of illustrative anecdotes.

Great read for open country hunting.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I've hunted very similar terrain as described by the author and often had the same thoughts: "No way am I going to find many deer here!". I too have been surprised by the amount of deer in wide open sage brush flats that other hunters drive past on their way to higher alpine areas. I was fascinated by the idea of sneaking up on a nice mule deer buck in wide-open country even though I am a rifle hunter!I believe Mr. Schuh shows his chops in this book and valuable tips and techniques can be gained by reading it. And it is true that Mr. Schuh is a bow hunter and as such this book is geared towards bow hunting. But if his techniques can help him sneak up with 25-35 yards of a mule deer buck with a bow in open country, it can certainly help a rifle hunter who isn't so limited by distance.Great read!

Timeless information
I already owned this book. I wanted to give it as a gift to somebody but absolutely did not want to give of my copy. One of, and possibly the best book I've ever read on hunting mule deer.

Good, Thoughtfull, Analytic Book on Mule Deer Hunting
I live in Southern California and never hunted mule deer before last season. This book was very valuable for me in the kind of open, mountainous, scrub terrain where I hunt. It explained a lot about the deer and about stalking them. A lot of hunting literature is a collection of hunting stories that you can learn from or not. But here the principles were foremost, and the stories illustrated the points the author was making. There was a lot of basic information about optics, the behavior of deer, their sensory abilities, the behavior of the wind in broken country etc. It was all good stuff and easy to understand.
