The material inside the padded part seems to be like several layers of fabric, maybe like 2-3 layers of neoprene, rather than something inflated that can deflate.The elastic around the leg are comfortable to wear, although if you spend a lot of time with your knees bent, the material will loosen, so if you wear these to jump around, they will start sliding down if they started out a bit loose. That's perfectly ok for my use anyway, but if you are wearing them for running and jumping, you may want to get a smaller size so they are a bit tighter to begin with.My knee is 13" in circumference (tape measure wrapped around knee). I got a Medium, and it's a perfect fit.
