I've tried a lot of freeze-dried meals over the years, but this Birria from BIGHORN Mountain Foods is a game-changer. The flavor is spot-on, with authentic Mexican spices and a hearty, meaty texture that’s incredibly satisfying after a long day outdoors. The beef rehydrates beautifully—tender and flavorful, with none of that weird, chewy texture you sometimes get with other brands. This meal is a bit saucy, which I actually enjoyed. The rice rehydrates quickly and perfectly too, which is a huge plus if you’ve ever dealt with undercooked, crunchy rice from other freeze-dried options! One of the standouts for me is how filling this meal is, even though it’s under 500 calories. I ate the entire pouch myself, and it was just the right amount. While the portion might be labeled as two servings, I’d say it’s ideal for one hungry camper. It’s on the pricier side, but the quality of the ingredients and the flavor made it worth it. If you're serious about good food on your adventures, this meal will not disappoint. Highly recommend!

Like many, although they taste good, I can't tolerate Mountain House meals. I've been using Peak Refuel for awhile, and they're really good but have fewer flavor options, so I'm always on the lookout for new options. This brand has fewer flavors than others but they're all very unique, so they feel more like adding new options than repeating the others. I LOVED this one. Most backpacking meals are heavy on seasoning and sauce, but this one also SMELLS good. There's a hint of chocolate/mole in there, not enough kick to impress your abuela but enough that most folks won't need to add extra hot sauce just to taste anything at all, and it actually rehydrated well (not all meals do). Only thing to keep in mind, a lot of meals call for 8oz or so of water, but this calls for 1.5c (12oz). Just keep it in mind.

For freeze dried I was very surprised and pleased. It was exactly what it said on the bag. I did add a nates honey sachet to sweeten it a little, but if I hadn’t had that I wouldn’t have missed it. I definitely would go less water than recommended but I like it dryer than soupy. I plan to put this in rotation, and will not be bringing any back home from any future excursions.

Wow, actually delicious. Not just "Its great for trail food!". I would make this at home for burrito fillings. No joke, an actual delicious on-trail meal. I live in Utah, so our mountain hiking is 8,000+ feet. Therefore, make sure you keep the water as hot as possible when adding to the bag. I also use a little aluminized bubble wrap pouch to keep it warm while I wait for rehydration. Let it sit as long as you can - 20+ minutes did the trick for me. Just do some of your other chores while you wait. Seriously though - a good meal.

One of the best backpacking meals I’ve had. My bar is usually not too high for dehydrated meals, so I was not expecting it to be fantastic, but I was very surprised by how delicious it was. There was a lot of meat and it was sufficiently rehydrated and not hard at all. The flavors were very good overall. Already purchased again.

This stuff taste alright but with in 6 hours I was on the toilet for half a day. Plus it’s more of a soup. I followed measurements exactly and I could basically drink the product. Never again.
