The smaller one does not need that. I have both and they are the best electric skillets I have ever owned. Or is this something we are pretending we aren’t noticing?** A: You can bake a cake in this on your counter too. NOT by putting this pan in the oven of course!! There are recipes online for baking cakes in a skillet. **Q: Can you use it for deep frying (if not too deep)?** A: I made home made french fries this evening and used my frying pan to deep fry. By that I mean the oil covered the fries. The frying pan does have depth. I use the frying pan many times during the week. I really like the even heat. **Q: I used my pan for the first time last nite and was disappointed. My thermostat plug does not fit securely. Basically it is loose. Why** A: My plug has a release on the side.
