Still don’t know how it should work!

I have the previous model of this, the TP-Link TL-WR702N (150mbps 802.11n-standard) as well as this one, the WR902AC (AC750). I don't do a lot of traveling, but got both devices for the flexibility of a small device that can be used as an access point, a bridge (repeater) or a router -- I've used both in all those modes. I specifically got this so I could use it as a repeater, to extend the reach of the 5GHz WiFi network of my main router in my previous apartment, where it worked fine -- there were no other 5GHz networks. I moved 6 months ago, and very quickly found out that this device, the WR902AC, does not support _ANY_ 5GHz WiFi channels above #48 -- specifically it does not support any of the high channels 148-165; this despite the fact that I bought the EU version of the device from Amazon Germany, and it has the EU version of the software -- and those channels are legal to use in Europe (as well as my country). Since I have a very noisy and crowded WiFi environment on both band ranges, the device is unusable; if I set my main router to choose its 5GHz channel automatically, it will always choose one of the higher channels since those are free of traffic & interference, and then the WR902AC won't connect to that network. If I force my router to choose one of the lower channels (and the usable ones change multiple times an hour), transmission rates are miserable (e.g., 7mbps, with a third of all web browser clicks yielding in a timeout), vs. the 234mbps I get with my main router. There are no available firmware upgrades, and the US-model version of the firmware refuses to install on this device. A router specifically advertised as a travel device should definitely allow change of geo region; even if it doesn't, it should definitely allow the channels legal in the region where it was bought. Still giving it two stars, because it may be a useful device for others, but for me it's become completely useless.

I purchased this item to allow for better WiFi coverage in my home. My router is in the basement and, although it is mounted in the ceiling in a central location, I do have a few spots where the coverage could be better. I also have numerous security devices outside that drop signals because the are too weak occasionally. This tiny router plugs into my ethernet switch on the main floor and the signal reaches every corner of the house from that location. The setup was a snap. I chose ethernet to Wifi, logged onto the router via the web portal provided and completed the ssid setup in just a few minutes. Once I gave the SSID unique names to differentiate between my existing router and the auxillary one and between the 5G and 2.4, I clicked save and was done. I use the same passwords for all my LANs except for the guest portal so switching my devices is easy as pie. I love the travel utility of this router also. I typically travel with at least 3 devices and if my wife comes along it can be as many as 6. Hotels tend to allow 2 per room so this will address that problem and provide a secure network at the same time. The reason that I did not give 5 stars overall is that I have fiber optic in my home and my speed is usually 170 mbbs or higher. This device claims to be capable of faster speeds by even hardwired is under 100 mbbs. Most people wont notice this or have an issue with it but, those that understand networking will might not appreciate the choking. That aside, the price, utility and ease of use make this a great value. I have to assume that those that gave it a less stellar review, are simply not tech savvy and did not understand how to set it up properly. I am very happy with the performance with the one exception noted.

This product is a repeat order. Has served as well for years.

The product is made in quality material and very small in size. It works as it claims. One thing I noticed that if I use my own Cat 5e Ethernet cable, it will not connect. I have to use the Cat 5e Ethernet cable provided. I didn't try more Ethernet cables. Also the micro USB cable is a bit too short, which is not a big problem, as every body has a lots of them in stock I guess.
