Analysis and Question Categorization by GMAT Genius
Founded by a Stanford MBA, GMAT Genius offers the highest quality GMAT tutoring to MBA aspirants worldwide. We specialize in helping advanced students reach the 90th to 99th percentile on the GMAT by teaching our clients how to approach the GMAT strategically.GMAT Genius has thoroughly analyzed the 2024-2025 GMAT Official Guides and we want to share our insights with you. The Quant Official Guide quotes GMAT Genius on page 10 – check it out! On the GMAT Genius website home page, you can download a detailed categorization of the questions in the 2024-2025 GMAT Official Guides.OVERVIEW of OFFICIAL GUIDEThe Official Guides for GMAT Review contain retired real GMAT questions and are an essential component of your GMAT preparations. Although all questions include answer explanations, many GMAT test takers are far from satisfied with these explanations. Explanations can be hard-to-understand and are often inefficient. Nonetheless, there is no better source of practice GMAT questions. The 2024-2025 Quant Official Guide edition contains 203 questions in the book, plus an additional 18 online-only questions. This edition includes 32 questions in addition to what was contained in the 2023-2024 Quant Official Guide. The difficulty of the 32 new questions is as follows: 8 Easy, 12 Medium, and 12 Hard. All of the 32 new Problem Solving questions are taken from the Official GMAT practice tests for the recently-retired prior version of the GMAT.All new questions are placed at the end of the difficulty sub-section of each question type. For example, there are 82 Easy-difficulty Problem Solving questions. Question numbers 1 to 75 are carried over from the prior edition, whereas question numbers 76 to 82 are the new questions. Based on this, we can conclude that questions are not necessarily placed in order of difficulty, as we saw with prior editions of the Official Guide.EFFECTIVE GMAT PREPARATIONBefore we categorize each GMAT question type, let’s briefly touch on how to effectively prepare for the exam. The GMAT is a critical thinking test, not a math and English test. To achieve a high score, it’s essential to approach the exam strategically. We recommend starting your preparations with a full-length Official GMAT practice test. Two free tests are available on MBA.com, the Official GMAT website. Then develop a focused study plan to bridge the gap between your current scoring level and your scoring objective. Aim to exceed the average GMAT scores for the schools to which you plan to apply. You can find this data on our website under Top U.S. Business Schools. The GMAT is a challenging exam, and it requires plenty of time to master. Plan to study over a 2-to-3 month period that is free of other major time commitments. Ideally there shouldn’t be more than a one week break in your studies, as skills tend to regress with a longer break. Since GMAT scores are good for five years, it’s best to complete the GMAT well before applying to business school.Be sure to use high quality materials, including the Official Guides for GMAT Review. The quality of your practice is more important than the quantity. Every missed question is a learning opportunity. Fully learn concepts and strategies underlying every missed question, so that you don’t repeat the same mistakes. Take additional practice tests at appropriate intervals to measure your progress. We offer much more detailed free GMAT preparation advice on the GMAT Genius website. Since the GMAT is a computer-based test, it is advisable to work though the questions online. Unfortunately, you can only select questions by question type and by difficulty. You cannot target practice on specific concepts when using the online question bank. When using the online question bank, we highly recommend doing timed practice sets using Exam Mode rather than Practice Mode. It is advisable to practice using timed question sets that replicate test day conditions. The functionality of the online platform is good overall.OTHER NOTESThe Official Guides are for practicing with real GMAT questions, not for learning the underlying concepts. The book contains a 53-page Math Review section that provides a very high-level overview of the math concepts tested on the GMAT. This math review will be highly inadequate except perhaps for the most advanced math students. We recommend that you use additional study materials to learn concepts.Wishing you the best of luck with your GMAT studies!
