This is NOT an SSD, it has platters and you must be careful not to move it when it is running.
It is an external hard drive that has spinning platters. Care must be taken not to move it when it is operating. I wish it was like the SSD drives as it needs a power source to operate.

Works great with Time Machine.
I made a clone of my iMac on a 2 TB SSD. this 6 TB passport Ultra backs it up with Time Machine perfectly. the first backup took a little time but then it works in the background just fine. backups are quick and you won’t notice until you need it.

Awesome perfect works on my MacBook Air
OK, I had a Seagate go bad. Another backup drive go bad for my MacBook Air and this thing is a real trooper. This thing is awesome. It works and I have had no problem with it.

Not portable, intended for stationary placement only, will fail if moved daily
Failed after 6 weeks of use (would show as connected at the port but would not mount or show up on disk utility and clearly not in finder). Would not recommend. Contacted company and they advised it wasn’t intended for portable use. Which…is…misleading….given the product name. They offered if I send mail it to them they could see if they could extract / restore anything on the drive (6-8 weeks), but given client assets were needed that day I just rebuilt from the last backup. History / moving forward: Also purchased another drive directly from the company store based on supports recommendation. That lasted 3 months. (Tried to review on but since it was purchased directly from WD and it won’t post it so that). Something goofy going on with the capabilities given the one I used previously for work lasted 13 years (had to be retired, plugged it in one day and had to safe mode to identify a fatal error, was able to pull everything off before it just stopped mounting altogether) and I have one for my clients that had lasted 14 years (and is still working and still gets traveled all over the place).

This was for a new MacBook Air...
Dec 1 2024 It is working and I understand the thing much better. Half of MY problem was understanding what this new Mac will do or not do. I bought this 4 TB hard drive specifically for this new MacBook Air. This hard drive and computer are both lighter than my Lenovo Windows 11. As things stand now the HD is nicely connected with the Mac via a hub (also from Amazon) , it is fully encrypted, and I can keep tons of files on the hard drive. It was recommended to me by a hard core Mac user to NOT sync the hard drive to the Mac, but do the transfers on my own. Keeping the Mac free of saved files is the way to go. This 4TD transfers files very fast so it is not as if there is some painful lag in ancient times. I still do not fully understand some of their other programs to go with this thing and am NOT going to do any more experimenting. When I might do Photoshop work on files I can copy them to the Mac, work on them, and then transfer them back. Or I can just work with them from the drive. If I want a fast computer I need to keep the Mac HD filled with free space. The case for this drive is well worth the money. Nov 26 2024/ getting things figured out, but the transition was confusing to say the least. Part of the problem is that Apple confuses me with "codes", "login key", "passkey", "key chain", and password. In some cases they are exactly the same thing. I have right now at least 6 Western Digital disk drive. NONE were as confusing as this install. I still believe that this drive was in the hands of someone else and software was removed. My other ones were simple to set up with Bitlocker or the like. ////// Earlier review: Not sure if I should send it back or not. For over an hour I managed to find the software on the Western Digital Mac OS site. Suddenly it started to ask me for a passkey, of which there was no such thing. I thought I had lost access, but ended up deleting the programs. Now all I have is a slave hard drive for my new MacBook Air. When I saw how things were working I had this sneaking suspicion that someone else had sent this back. Usually when I have gotten hard drives like this the proper software only needs to be clicked and things get set up. NOT in this case. Getting in contact with WD support was another 45 minutes and it proved worthless. It is always a FAQ, a video, and how things are AI driven. I want to be able to set up SECURITY ON THIS THING. However, the software keeps asking for a password(s) that never work. Is this thing using someone else's password. If I don't figure it out soon, I'll return for one that maybe needs more inspection prior to being sent. Very frustrating and I hate hate sending stuff back. I want to use it.

Works great - indicator light is in the wrong place
This thing worked perfectly first time out of the box. Just plugged it in an backed up my I-Mac. I had several Seagate Drives fail on me recently and decided to change brands. The only beef I have with this unit is the indicator light is on the back of the unit where you plug it in. Makes no sense at all

Fast Backup
UPDATE- This drive that I first reviewed failed within two months. I gave it a 5-star review. So, I bought a second one - and it began having problems almost immediately. I called their tech support, was handed off to a text messaging tech and explained what was happening (the drive LED was constantly flashing) and after trying a few things, they finally said to use my Disk Utility. After I did that, it found numerous errors, once the utility was finished the drive began working properly and I haven't had another issue yet. It was good to know that their tech support was available to resolve my issue. FIRST DRIVE REVIEW: I was using a WD 1T Passport with the original USB connection from practically the dark ages and it was performing so slowly, taking hours to back up. I finally bought this 5T model and it backs up in bare minutes. It plugs directly into my MacBook Pro with USB C. No complaints, it works seamlessly with Time Machine.

Broke down within 4 months
Just started using this disk that I bought in july, but today it broke down on me. Unable to mount and making bad sounds. Probably lost all data on it.
